Can you be addicted to addictions? - July 9th 2009, 06:09 AM

My mom has a long addictions history. First, she was addicted to drugs and acohol(when she was younger), then she was just an acoholic. Then, once she stopped drinking she became like a shopaholic. She would blow all of her money on very worthless things, stuff that wasn't always even for us, or gifts, just like randomly go grocery shopping for somebody else. Then, after she realized the great debt she caused our family, she became addicted to gambeling. She would go to the slots when ever she could afford the trip, and blow all of her money. If she couldn't take the trip, she'd blow like atleast $20 on scratch of lottery tickets per visit! Now, she seems to be ditching our family for work for as long as she can. Through this whole time, she's been a chain smoker....The only time she doesn't have an addiction (except for smoking) is when she's divorcing my dad(her and my dad almost got divorced twice, and both times she didn't have an addcition). So, I was wondering, is this like an addictions TO addictions?!

Some people just have addictive personalities.

I'm the same way, at the end of a hard day, or in times of stress, I have to have something that I can turn to. I used to cut. I replaced that with smoking cigarettes. I replaced that with smoking weed. Went back to cigarettes. Then turned to occasional drinking. Now I just hit inanimant objects.

Basically it's what Shannon said, some people have addictive personailties. You just have to talk to her about it. That's what I suggest you do.

Some people can get addicted to things easier than others. Your mother to me seems to be trying her best to deal with stress and find a way that is less and less destructive physically, financially, etc... . So to answer your question, no it is not an addiction to addictions.

Hiya,

Like some people have mentioned, it's just that there are certain people who possess addictive personailities.

It's not bad, it just depends on the addiction(s). Maybe you should try to introduce your mum to a health addiction.

I hope everything works out well. Take care.

You can be addicted to addiction. I am. I have to be addicted to something or I get nervous. I was a cutter for a while which was an addiction and when I stopped I had to find a new addiction. I can't just like something, I have to become obsessive.
