Willing myself to stop - August 30th 2009, 06:17 AM

This is extremely bothersome. I bite my lips constantly, and it gets progressively worse as I keep doing it, I usually wind up with really ugly bitten up lips because of it, especially if I happen to be stressed out (I do it more then.)

It's hard because even when I catch myself doing it, a lot of the time I'll keep going on just because I can't seem to will myself to stop. I sit there thinking "Ugh, this is bad for me. I'm going to look really bad after this. I should stop" but I never can do it...

Any tips? Or has this happened to anyone else?

You're really great for trying to stop this habit, Vicki. What are you feelin' so stressed about? [: Hopefully, if you were able to "fix" or "improve" the underlying problems, the lip-biting would also stop. I'm rather addicted to chapstick (like, I literally think I'm addicted to mentholated lip balms), so I kind of see where you're coming from. It's rather annoying.

I'm sure you've already done all kinds of research on this, but a few things I found after a couple of Google searches:

  • Put lotion on your lips instead of any sort of lip balm. I've actually done this before when I didn't have chapstick (yeah, it's that bad), and let's get real, it doesn't taste good. Hopefully, if you had something on your lips that made you not want to bite them, you wouldn't? Just a thought.
  • Perhaps instead of lip biting, you should use chapstick. However, really, get some that is unmentholated. Or you will be sorry. >< This way, you'll be doing SOMETHING every time you want to bite your lips, but it won't be quite so harmful to your skin.
  • Chew gum! I honestly don't know if this would work at all, but I figured it was worth suggesting. If you had something else in your mouth to chew on, maybe you'd be less likely to focus on biting your lips.
Hopefully you'll figure something out soon. You're absolutely right in that it is partially a mental thing, so I think that the fact that you're trying to will yourself to stop is definitely going to help. Good luck with it.
