My boyfriend and our friend play TF2 a lot too.

They only thing that stops my boyfriend playing it 24/7 is me. I don't play it so to spend time with me he has to stop playing it, he has admitted though if it wasn't for that he would only stop playing it to play his guitar and those 2 thing would be his life.

Our friend doesn't have a girlfriend or anything else to do and he is 100% addicted to it. He spent so much time in his room playing it his parent sent his to a doctor for depression and he had to go to therapy and everything. Now he has been making an effort to come out with us and socialize but still find time for TF2. We also did a mock exam in school and his grade had dropped a lot so that was a big slap in the face for him to stop playing as much and concentrate on school more. He has said he is happier now he has a balance between TF2 and his life.

Take a step back and look at your life and see if you are truly happy wasting so much time on TF2. Think about the future, you are going to want a job and a good life and for that you need your education not TF2. You don't have to give it up completely because it isn't a harmful addiction but went it start affecting you school work and sleep then it has gone a bit too far.
If you have to give the game to someone to hide for a week and show yourself you can cope without it and you don't need to play it.

Yes I would advise going cold turkey. Then if you still feel urges, replace it with another game - that way you can fill the void with something you're not addicted to (this can backfire if you become addicted to the 2nd game, obviously But most times that doesn't happen! I swear!)
