Cracking my knuckles - April 16th 2010, 12:49 AM

So.. I'm hooked on cracking my knuckles. I do it all the time, when I'm bored, nervous mad, anything. They hurt from cracking them so much. Anyone else have this problem? How can I stop? And is it true that it can make your knuckles fat.

Thankss

Hey Natasha,

I used to crack my knuckles all the time. I don't do it anymore, I'm pretty sure that when I was going to stop, I just didn't think of it, and always kept my hands busy so I wasn't tempted to do it. It does make your knuckles larger because my dad said that it causes arthritis in your fingers? Whenever the weather starts to get rainy and stormy, my fingers hurt all the time because of this. So its bes to stop while you can!

i cracked my knuckles to still and its also addicting to me. it was very hard to stop but i overcame it. you can stop by probably thinking of something else. i never heard of fat knuckles but i know there was a myth of them causing arthritis. but that isn't true at all. just think of something else.

That was a pretty interesting article on cracking your knuckles. It says that it won't cause arthritis. I also enjoyed this article which said that people who crack their knuckles are more likely to have healthier joints.

That being said... I crack my knuckles, back, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, toes, and wrists. There is not a part of me that I can't crack. It relieves the pressure, I like doing it, and I have no intentions of stopping.

There's no harm in cracking your knuckles but if it's causing pain, then for that reason, I'd consider stopping. From John-Hopkins University, it too says it does not cause arthritis but there have been cases of ligament damage. It also documents that one will have weaker grip strength with chronic knuckle-cracking. http://www.hopkins-arthritis.org/art...arthritis.html

You should really read the second article again on not causing arthritis as it says "No it's not the knuckle cracking that's preventing arthritis, it's the fact that they tend to be more active people". It also says to stop if you feel pain. That being said, you're right it doesn't cause arthritis but your second article doesn't support it. This isn't an actual debate so there's no need to pursue your insufficient evidence on that.

O_o There's no need to insult udontno's "insufficient evidence", she was just proving it's not dangerous.
Which is cool. I did not know this. Awesome.

Re: Cracking my knuckles - May 2nd 2010, 01:28 AM

It is so common for people to crack their knuckles or other joints!
I do it quite often when I'm trying to concentrate on something, & my feet and hands ache if I dont crack my joints which is weird!
If it is causing you pain though, perhaps you need to find another outlet to keep your hands busy? Try and sit on them, or write/ draw?? I don' know, but it doesn't sound too good that they're becoming painful because of it.
If you're cracking them because you're bored maybe you could try and relieve boredom or become more busy so you don't have time to do it, if it's becoming a serious problem?

I crack my knuckles all the time.
It hasn't affected me at all, so if you don't mind doing it, that's fine.
If it hurts or whatever, then you should probably stop.
I'm not a doctor, and it's your choice.

I was always told that cracking your knuckles or anything else was bad. When you do, it causes friction and wears down the bubble of sinovial fluid (or something like that) around it. It can cause arthritis to occur over time, and it comes sooner than normal.

I'm no doctor, so don't depend of the validity of what I just said.

When I see/hear someone crack their knuckles it makes me feel sick. The noise and idea of it goes through me :| I don't think it does anything bad to you but I know loads of people who feel the same way as me. I wouldn't tell anyone not to do it in front of me but just remember loads of people don't like it.

You know how the sound of a fork against a plate? it's like that to me :|

It's perfectly normal, I do it too. Though if it's causing you pain, why not try doing something else as a distraction, like popping bubble wrap or knitting as these will keep your hands active with less potential side-effects?
