Pulling out hair. - August 25th 2011, 06:38 PM

Thought about posting this for a few months now... finally told myself that I had to get over the embarrassment of the whole thing and get to the bottom of it.

I kind of pull out my hair
Not on my head or anything... like I pull out my leg and pubic hair

I know what you're thinking... 'That's gross!'

I've been doing it for about a year. Never thought much of it until a few months ago. I've started getting bald patches and my skins bleeds some times.

I'm trying to stop Self Harming and I seem to be doing it a lot more than usual. It's getting beyond a joke. If there's even a pair of tweezers in sight I'll sit for ages plucking each hair out making sure I've got the root. Even without tweezers I'll sit yanking hair out.
Sometimes I don't even realise I'm doing it.

How can I stop? It's a really embarrassing habit...

P.S. I think this goes here... Feel free to move it if it's in the wrong place.

Whilst I can't diagnose you, it sounds a bit like Trichotillomania to me (click here for info. and for advice on what to do).

I definitely agree with some of the previous posters. Like they said, we're not doctors, so we can't make a true diagnosis. But I definitely think trichotillomania is something you should do some research on. It's nothing to be embarrassed about though. For what it's worth, there's a girl at my school who has this and she is an amazing person. No one looks at her any different because of it. You're just as amazing and people will see that.

My friend pulls out her eyebrows, but we've never spoke about why she does it. She's embarassed about it so she always wears her hair so that she has a fringe that covers her almost bare eyebrows. It's definitely a "thing" but I don't know enough to say what it is. But you certainly aren't alone.

I suppose it's nice to know it's not unusual but are you sure it's just not a bad habit? :/

Its your habit I think since you're young. Its mannerism or something inheritance.

Hm, it seems to me like it's not a bad habit. Actually, I think you should treat it like you treat self harm, and look for alternatives to it. It's not AS negative as self-harm, but it's still a negative thing that there should be some concern over it. Try to distract yourself and it will be easier to stop doing as often.
Best of luck!
