How to stop biting pencils/pens - November 18th 2011, 02:33 PM

I really must stop putting things in my mouth! especially pens and pencils. If there is anything in my hand, my mobile/remote/specs/paper, I will put that thing in my mouth! But most of the time it is the pen/pencils. I really need to stop this habit! HELP!

I used to do this all the time especially in school. I'd keep a piece of hard candy or gum nearby so that I could chew on that rather than my pen/pencil. Maybe this method could help you too?

I'm the same. And if I don't have anything to put in my mouth apparently I chew my tongue. Never noticed until my dentist told me off for it, but she's right, I do it all the time.
But if its pens and the such you are worried about you can go to a chemist and get something to put on them. Its the same thing they use with children that suck their thumb. It tastes horrid and it meant to soon put you off putting anything in your mouth. I forget the name but your chemist should have a good idea if you explain.

Try this, it should help because by having something else in your month it should stop you from chewing your pen or pencil. Plus you'll get a good flavor in your mouth with gum or hard candy.

This may sound mad/insane but one way you could try is this : buy some nail polish the type that people put on their nails to stop themselves biting their nails it has a horrid taste and put it on your pens and pencils so then when you chew them you get a horrid taste in your mouth, hopefully by doing that you will be able to stop chewing/biting pens and pencils, if the nail polish works for nail biting it should hopefully work for pen and pencil biting too.

I had the same problem for 6 years but at school you can't chew gum so I just reminded myself that this is immature and embarrassing and my friends would get disgusted by me so I stopped. Hope this helps.

I agree with the putting something horrible tasting on pens/pencils you use so when you go to chew them, you're soon put off by the horrible taste. Hopefully it'll help you stop because you'll remember how horrible it tastes everytime you go to do it.

Re: How to stop biting pencils/pens - November 25th 2011, 12:58 AM

I use to have this problem when I was younger! I would stick the most random things in my mouth. Pencils, erasers, toys, the string/rope ends at the end of sweatshirts, my sweatshirt sleeves, ect.

Since you don't like gum, what you can do is use a different type of chewy or hard candy. If you have pieces of Laffy Taffy or caramel in your school bag, you can just pop one in your mouth and it should help calm your nerves down while also getting that chewing temptation wear off. Sucking/chewing on hard candy might help and if you don't bite it away, it might last longer. It could be the really cheap mints, lifesavers, tictacs, ect. You could get whatever giant bag is on sale at a Walmart/target/gorcery store/gas station/ect. near you. I know I keep candy in my purse all the time so I could munch on it during school.

The main reason why teachers don't like gum is because it ruins stuff at school, like carpet or desks, and it is a pain to remove. With other types of candy, if you are just popping one piece in your mouth, there shouldn't be a problem.

What also helped me was taking the object out of my mouth every time I noticed I was doing it again. I know it can be kinda hard sometimes, but if you just force yourself right away, it would become less of a habit to bite on things.

I hope this helps

Tic tacs are small mint or fruit flavoured sweets.

I'm going to close this thread because the original topic seems to have been covered fully. If you have an issue with this please PM me.
