Biting skin. - December 7th 2011, 08:48 PM

I'm constantly biting the skin around my nails. I'll leave the actual finger nails alone..but around them is all raw and peeled back. I don't know why I do this. It happens more so when I'm nervous or bored but it's seriously a problem sometimes (infection, appearance.) I've dont this as long as I can remember. How can I stop?

I do tge same thing, so you're not alone. An idea would to be to use the stuff parents use to get their child to stop sucking their thumb/fingers.

If this is constant and you do it when you tend to get nervous this might be a result from an anxiety issue.
I suggest seeing a doctor about the skin and counsellor about your nerves.

Re: Biting skin. - December 8th 2011, 11:13 PM

I do the same thing. My fingers get raw from being chewed, and sometimes they bleed. It's uncomfortable to hold a pencil. I don't do it nearly so often as I did. The only time I really do it now is if say there's a hangnail on my finger, I start biting that and just forget to stop.

I've tried putting bandages on my thumb & middle finger, 'cause I chewed on them the most. Putting clear nail polish all around your nails, because it makes it taste and feel weird. Also, that stuff people put on their nails when they chew on them? It works to put that around them too. I don't know where you live, but it's a pretty blustery winter here in Canada, so wearing a pair of gloves when you go out, or around the house is a pretty good option too, I think.

Sorry, I'm kind of fresh out of ideas. I don't think it was such a big problem with me as it seems to be with you, so I wish you the best of luck.

(Oh, and I see you've only been here a month, so welcome! c: )
