Thumb sucking? - December 16th 2011, 09:25 AM

So I have a huge problem with sucking my thumb. I don't do it in public, but if I'm at home or sleeping I'm always sucking my thumb. I have two calluses on my thumb from sucking it for all these years. I have two questions- any advice on stopping? Also, if I do stop, will the calluses ever go away on their own?
I figured if the calluses never go away I could tell whoever asks it was a burn, but still.

I have this habit also but only when I go to sleep. I don't know exactly why I do it I guess I just never stopped from when I was little. I don't have any caluses from it though. Whatever you get a calus from if you stop doing that it takes a while but I am pretty sure it eventually goes away. I am not entirely sure how to stop since I haven't and I haven't really cared if I do or not but maybe instead of sucking your thumb you get a piece of gum or a sucker instead? Hope I am helpful.

I have a suggestion, buy some nail polish designed for nail biting and put it on all of your nails so that when you go to suck your thumb it tastes horrible.

On another note, I'm 21 and sleep with a blanket and a teddy, there is nothing wrong with sucking your thumb at night, if its a comforting thing I don't see why you should need to stop sucking your thumb, you could always try using google or a health site to find out how to treat calluses.

the girl who never stopped trying finally

' i can't do this anymore'

I've heard of people putting lemon juice or petroleum jelly on their thumbs to keep them from sucking on it. It's sometimes used on young children, too. As others have mentioned it IS a comfort thing and there isn't anything wrong with it. I'm 21 and I have to sleep with my stuffed penguin named Peter. If it isn't on my bed I can't sleep.

If you want to stop, google should have plenty of answers but as others have said, it's a comfort thing and really you don't have to stop. I'm 15 and I still sleep with a really old stuffed animal dog my mom got when she was a baby then passed down to me, he's named Newpaperboy, lolz
