Cliche' - March 4th 2012, 08:14 PM

So, I started smoking 'dem Stoggie butts like, A year and a half ago.

(cigarettes)

I feel like I'm not addicted yet though. Is this strange? I smoke 4-5 times every couple of days, but somedays I'll smoke a whole pack.

If I see someone smoking in like, a show, I want one. But that's the only time.

Is this normal for a person to not be addicted after such a long period of time?

Some drugs just don't stick with some people. I'd say you should feel lucky.

hey Dylan..don't you know? Nobody ever thinks they're addicted. Who'd want to go there?

Try putting them down and see what happens, how it feels.

I'll just add that also some people aren't as susceptible to addiction as others. I know that when I first started I could go months at a time without a smoke, but then a few months ago I had one socially, which is normal for me every few months, and I got addicted. I even dreamed about smoking and I just wanted a cigarette so bad. So consider yourself lucky so far if you aren't addicted, but I suggest not pushing it because you could be just one away from getting addicted.

Sorry, this ^ is incorrect.

Addiction is a physiological response determined by the effects of the chemical (in this case, nicotine) on the human body...which reacts pretty much the same to nicotine, there isn't an individual difference in response.

Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, it doesn't take much for the body to develop the tell tale symptoms of nicotine addiction.

Well incorrect or not, that's just how my experience was. He probably knows better than me, I'm just saying that that was how things went with me.

Well Dr. Bobby is right in that everyone is just as susceptible to getting addicted, but some people have more will power and are stronger in keeping away from those things than others, which I think is where the "not as addicted" can come into play. It may seem like that is what's going on, but its not the case.

Dylan, my title is earned the hard way..thru work, not by being beknighted, so plain old 'Dr.' is just fine...

I don't mean to alarm you...actually, I do, that's a lie. Cigarettes are nasty things that cause harm...even eventual death..when used as intended by the manufacturer. Cancer or emphysema are horrible, horrible diseases..and completely avoidable.

No one thinks they're going to be addicted to anything. No one wakes up and says "Gee, i'm going to become an addict today". No one. We don't think it can happen.

the danger here is that logically no one wants or expects to become addicted, but due to the biochemical nature of addiction, once we make the choice to start something that is addictive, we have no control over it. The body physically needs the substance (nicotine) and without it, there are cravings and withdrawal. Mind over matter doesn't work, which is the scary part, and the part no one really thinks about before or while they're dosing up, er, smoking.

So, as a public health warning, I say don't even start. And if you have, quit. there is no safe level of nicotine (or the other toxic substances in tobacco)... You can quit, but it is difficult. But, not nearly as difficult as living with an iron lung machine..or premature death.

Smoking is a major health disaster.
