Addicted to the internet - March 26th 2012, 10:12 PM

Sup.

Lately my motivation has nose-dived and I find myself spending more time on my laptop wasting time on the 'net... I feel like I 'have' to check my FB, 4chan, whatever and if I don't then I feel tense and worked up until I get it done.

Anyone got some tips for solving this?

Thanks in advance.

Not the only one there. Try doing something that interests you other than the internet, like... hanging out with friends, reading, watching a movie, going for a walk, cooking, anything really. Just try to stay away sometimes when you have the "urge" to check your internet stuff....

-If nothing works, you could always get someone to hide things you go on the internet with. That would work.

J, this is actually a common thing. People can get so caught up in the need to plug into the net that they can feel overwhelming stress and anxiety and urgency if they cannot.

The solution to this is to first recognize that you're out of control here (which you have) and then treat this like any other things that's gotten the best of you: Set some limits on yourself pertaining to it's use. So, for you, that might mean setting times when you check in...and then check out and get back to reality. And stick to it.

That last part is the most important..by modifying and controlling your urges, you get to see that the world doesn't collapse or you miss out on something earth shattering b/c you aren't always checking in. Slowly, you begin to realize this, and the urgency fades.

Cheers guys. I was expecting to be ridiculed, guess you all are accepting of people's little quirks!

I'll give this advice a shot.

I guess people are so accepting because everybody can probably empathize with you a little bit...I know I can

Can't do that if I'm also an internet addict, but I can proudly say, yesterday was the first day in a week that I was on for hours...

Re: Addicted to the internet - March 27th 2012, 02:21 PM

Hey there,

I definitely can relate to you. When I was in my depression I used my lap top to fill a void. And what ended up happening is I let the internet take over my life. Literally. I was skipping college classes for TH/FB/MSN. I would take three to four hours on an online test that probably only should have taken half that time. I lost contact with all my friends because I needed to be online. So then I only had online friends. Which, they're pretty amazing too. But it's an unhealthy way to live life. Too much of any one thing is detrimental.

How did I solve this? Well, I moved. I'm not saying to move I moved for other reasons too. But anyways, when I moved I had limited internet access. The only way I could way I could obtain internet access was through the coffee shop, which was only open until five. And I got a job. I also have a phone with internet. Point is, limit your time spent on the computer. Set times that you can get on. And stick to that. The thing you should do is keep yourself busy. I found out that I really didn't NEED to be on the computer. Yeah, I'm still on it a few hours again. But I also have two jobs, pay my bills, etc. And I can live without it, should I ever have to.

I asked for help about this on Tumblr a few days ago and someone replied saying to limit yourself, and make those limits greater each time. Go for an hour without it. Then, try a few hours. A day. A few days. Keep doing it until you control it, and not have it control you.

Re: Addicted to the internet - March 29th 2012, 12:43 AM

There will be no ridicule from me here.
I've got the same problem hahahaha.
I go to school though and do my homework first, or while I'm online. (That makes it take a ton longer, but it gets done....)
What really taught me a lesson was when I couldn't get into my laptop. Long story short, my family was (and still are) livid at the few hours I spend on the internet a day, so they put a password on my internet and only let me use it for school-related things and to do what I wanted afterwards. It really taught me something and I kept with that routine for like four months and followed the structuredness of it on my own for a while. (I think I'm starting to slip back into those old habits.) But it is worth a try and does help, unless you have like nothing else to do like me, then, welll I have no idea...

"i don't care your intentions. I just want you to know my self-hatred never took me where I wanted to go. At the end of the day...I can pick at the pain but I can't cut it away."

The exact same happened to me. What I did is I pretty much forced myself to do something productive each day. Whether that be homework, exercise, or even going out to socialize with friends, I made sure I ticked that box before I gave myself more time on the web. Just do something (even if it's going out to eat with friends) which will get you up and doing something. It feels a whole lot better if you do something which will benefit you in the long run such as exercise and homework. Hope this helped!

Go slow. Don't just stop that could led to depression. Spread it over a month. Have a goal. For example, i want to my reduce my internet time from 8 hrs to 2 hrs a day. Post it somewhere where you will look at it everyday. Don't give up. If you have a set back just start from the beginning. Remember, I'm always here for you. Feel free to pm anytime anywhere.

I am also addicted. But this past week i have only been on about 2 hours, instead of 4. I have just kept myself busy with other things. I used to be online instead of doing homework. I have done all my homework this week.

From day one I talked about getting out
But not forgetting about
How all my worst fears are letting out
He said, "Why put a new address on the same old loneliness?"
When breathing just passes the time
Until we all just get old and die

I may try to lessen my internet usage, as well. TH doesn't count as the internet, right? xD

I've had the same problem, except it's been going on for the past three years. Dx What I do to try to stop is go out and run around, or read, or just try to do anything but Internet, including video games and TV. Try to do things without Internet for an hour, and then a bit more, check your websites periodically instead of refreshing it every few minutes, stuff like that...
