Unhappy I want to be a musician - October 24th 2013, 10:16 AM

I play guitar and sing, but the problem is, not confidently. At home in my room, I can fully express myself, I dont care if anyone is listening, as long as they aren't watching me. I love it so much and I'd love to upload covers to youtube and sing in front of my family and friends and actually perform places... but Im sooo nervous. It makes me sound so much worse than I am. I have been trying all year about once a term and I still get so nervous! I even write my own songs but I could never tell anyone because I can't even show them how I really perform. Basically why I'm writing is because today my music teacher told me my performances are basically shit. I know this isnt because of my ability but because of my nerves. Its so bad, I shake so bad I can barely strum.
Does anyone have any tips? I want to be able to freely perform and express myself more than anything in the world.

Practice, practice, practice. You practice in private, right, so you can get better? For most people, you have to practice performing. Maybe try recording yourself and playing that back, so you're being an audience to yourself? Try playing alone in different places, with pets. One person at a time at first.

The other thing to remember is that when you're performing, the people in the audience are on your side. They're out to support you, not heckle you, and most of the audience have no idea about the fine details anyway. Sound confident, play confidently, and they'll give you back that energy and more.

Feel free to email/PM/VM/whatever me if you want. I'll answer as soon as I can.

Hey there. I think the user above gave some really great advice. Practice, practice, practice. You can only get better by practicing. As the quote goes: "Don't practice until you can get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong".

On another note, I think the video taping and reviewing is a great idea. I would also encourage you to bring a friend around to watch you practice. Then maybe after a few weeks, bring two friends around or maybe some family members. Than after a month or so, bring 5 or 6 people around to see how you preform. Then bring more people around. Once you reach 10 or so, your confidence should begin to get a nice big boost, and you shouldn't seem as afraid of preforming in front of people. Hopefully, you will then be able to preform in front of bigger crowds. This may take time - but it's worth it.

Best wishes,
Chris
