Exclamation Volunteer Trip! - November 3rd 2015, 02:42 AM

Hey guys!

So I have a friend that went on a volunteer trip to Africa (Ghana) over the summer for three weeks. She loved it! I've always wanted to travel and I love helping people so I decided to do this as well. I chose Cross Cultural Solutions to do the trip with in the summer of 2016 because it's the cheapest option. Not only that, you get lodging with others, three meals a day, and millions of cultural excursions! I'm really excited because I'm dead set on going. My mom won't let me go to Africa because she thinks I need to start closer first (along with the millions of shots and pills and astronomically expensive plane ticket). So I settled on a child development project in Costa Rica. Only problem is I really want to go for a month. In my research I learned that everyone regretted not going a full month. So hey why not? But I don't have $5,000+ laying around... Not including a passport and plane ticket. My mom says rich family will take care of it but I'm kinda nervous because I reallyyyyy want to go. My friend wants to go too! So fundraising ideas? I need a $350 fee to reserve my spot. Ugh I really want to go. So any ideas help! I've started babysitting. I need to get a bank account to put this money in so I won't be prompted to spend it on clothes lol. My friend doesn't have the same money resources as me so this is really for her. I don't wanna go alone!

Thanks for any ideas xx

Hey, Alyssa, I think it's wonderful you want to go abroad and help people out! Of course it is going to be very expensive no matter where you go. You're old enough to get a job, so why not do that? I think at 16, you can work more hours. Here you can, but in Oregon it might be different.

Hey Alyssa!

It is awesome you want to spend some time abroad helping people and learning.
I cannot think of any fundraising ideas at this current moment in time but I am sure if you talked with your mom, the advisor heading the trip or maybe even other people at your school you will come up with something.
I know a lot of people that make pages online through websites for fundraising and share them with their FaceBook friends/other social netwroking websites. If that is an option you would be comfortable with, try it out.
Also remember that if this oppurtunity does fall through it does not ruin your chances of volunteering in the future. You will have many chances to go abroad in the future especially if you attend a college that emphasizes/offers trips for students to go abroad.
I hope all goes well and that you can achieve this goal!
Take care.

Thank you! I'm also planning to start at the Red Cross in that next few weeks as well.

Yes, lots of my friends have jobs. Sadly, my mom won't let me get one! I go to a middle college so I have dual enrollment in both a high school and college, so I can take classes there. She wants me taking as many credits as I can instead of worrying about working. Maybe next year! As of now I only need 5.5 credits to graduate, but I'm spanning them out to get as many college credits as I can. So hopefully I can go! Thanks for the advice
