Study Aboard - April 20th 2010, 03:46 AM

My future that I am trying so hard to achieve is to go to Australia, and study to become a veterinarian. Its why I started my blog, I wish to "broadcast" my entire 6 year adventure. Let students around the world know what it's like to travel at the other end of the world to study away from everything.

Have any of you done Aboard studying or student exchanges?

It's totally been a dream of mine to study abroad. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be able to do such until after high school. I hope to study in England.

I'm studying abroad next semester in Singapore. If any of you ever go to a UC (University of California), they have a really good study abroad program called EAP, and it's a really painless process (other than the paperwork). I'm sure most 4 year colleges have good study abroad programs as well.

I should also note that when I was in high school, my family hosted an exchange student from Thailand for 6 months, so it works both ways.

You're really lucky! I would be in Sydney at NSW. You should check out my blog, I started to write my process in getting to that point!

Re: Study Aboard - April 20th 2010, 06:39 PM

I dream of studying abroad. I asked my parents about it, I asked if I could do it in my last year of High school (with a special program). But they said no for two reasons: it's very possible that I would have to do that year twice, and secondly it costs a lot.
But when I'm in College, I will be able to participate to an Erasmus-program (for the Americans who don't know this, it's a study-abroad program from the EU in all countries of Europe), and the EU pays a lot of the costs. Or/And I will go to the USA to be an au-pair for a year, and I would like to combine it with uni-courses.

I did go to the USA to study High School, if was fun and everything. The next exchange I'm planning is going to Spain in two summers 2011 to study some classes.
But if you do have the change go, it's a very nice experience.

I've got the option to study abroad in South Korea, Singapore or...somewhere else that I can't recall.
Normally I'd jump at the chance, but it's the same year as my industrial placement and that takes precedence over studying as it gives me real experience for a job.

I'd quite like to study abroad but not straight away. I'm currently thinking about studying for my second degree in Europe somewhere, assuming I do well enough so I can get my first degree

Which country do you live in at the moment Erik? My best friend looked into vet med in Australia so I know a little bit about it if you're from the UK.

Mostly - it's ridiculously expensive. (and hence she decided not to do it if she could get in in the UK)

I am in Canada, It will be about 42,000$au a year + food + rent+etc...

so we are looking at about 100,000$/year! ITs too bad that we dont get reduced rates since we are part of the Commonwealth + a Queen's land...

I'll probably stick with studying in the UK.. Just because of the cost and also, i wouldn't really want to leave my whole life behind just yet. I definitely have plans to move abroad when i'm older but not to study -- like, once i'm working and earning a living.

I think the farthest abroad I'm likely to get is Wyoming, for a geology class this summer. I'd love to go to Europe, Alaska or the Karakoram/Himalaya range though... but probably not likely

I'm lucky cost wise, because I have New Zealand citizenship, so I get "Commonwealth support" and so reduced fees. I won't be able to get any help with the reduced fees or living costs though :/

Erik, bare in mind that you won't be able to get a loan from an Australian firm. Check whether you can get one from Canada to study abroad with because otherwise you better have really rich parents! Could you not go to a Canadian University where you get to spend part of a year studying in Australia?

It is so none of my business, but Queensland University of Technology is better for education (despite my bias ). I have tons of friends who go to UQ and honestly, the organisation of their timetables etc. is really sucky compared to QUT. Not to mention the really bad things that UQ have done in the past year, like firing their Gender/Sexuality counsellor and moving the entire veterinary school to a different campus, giving students only a few months notice. It's not a bad uni, but I wouldn't want to go there.

And I'm not the traveling type, so I'm happy to stay where I am and study .

I'm going to say that I wouldn't want to study abroad, because I'm a huge homebody and I couldn't stand being away from my family and where I live for too long.
I would like to visit Europe though. That's one of my dreams

I know the family thing is hard, but it shows a little independence, so that you can experience your life in a different way.

I have looked at QUT ... my mine pull to UQ is the course tbh. It's just one I really want to do. Like over here it's kind of difficult to choose modules in Psychology, but the UQ course gives me a lot of choice

Erik ... I'm guessing you're American? (From the flights in dollars thing :P) You know terms etc start in March? From a friend who went over this year, it is best to fly out January/February because there's tax issues etc you need to sort out before you start ... might change flight prices?

As for the actual question, I'm not sure. I think it would be such a great experience, but I would probably be too scared, in all honesty.

I was going to go Abroad with a group from my college to Germany next semester, it's suppose to be a great experience. Unfortunely, I can't go, but I hope you get to go! (It's cheaper if you go through a current college or univerisity.)
