Where do you Volunteer? - July 18th 2010, 11:04 PM

I am interested to know where people Volunteer in this huge world. This is a huge world, and knowing how people are making an impact in the world would be great.

I make an impact by volunteer with environmental organizations in Canada. I have been across Canada making an impact in many organizations.

I volunteer at the local nature reserve.
I help out with the work-party which is organised by the warden. I also help the Education Officer with school trips and other activities.

I am also thinking of becoming a leader at my old scout group.

I volunteer mostly with the animal rights organisation SAFE. Our current campaign has been a massive success gaining a huge amount of media coverage, and is resulting in changed laws for the better treatment of pigs. Thus, I spend a fair amount of time dressed in a pig costume

I've done some volunteering with a crisis pregnancy center in the past and plan on working more regularly at one next summer. I also volunteer here (). I can't really do much of the volunteering I'm interested in until I'm 16 or 18.

Re: Where do you Volunteer? - July 19th 2010, 07:13 AM

No where but recently I've been thinking a lot about donating blood and volunteering for Amnesty International.

The former, because well, why not? And the latter because it seems as though they are the only people in Australia in the moment (other than the Greens) speaking out for Asylum seekers.

It's a hot issue here at the moment and I can't understand why they are being treated like dirt. For the politicians, it's basically a race to who can get them the fatherest away.

Things like building a dentention centre in East Timor (It got knocked back though thank god) and slogans like 'Turn the boats around'.

Everyone just seems so ignorant about it, and I know for sure it's not as cut and dry as 'Just let them in' but they are people and are not being treated as such.

I've wanted to do some volunteer work for quite some time. I don't want to be one of those people who complain and complain but never do.

There aren't many oppurtunities in this state though but now I've found what I want to do I think I'm going to inquire next week (I have exams this week.)

On here and I'm currently training to be a Childline counsellor. I've done one practical shift so far so I'll soon be able to take calls regularly.

I only volunteer here at the moment. I've wanted to volunteer at other places but I have a real life job and it's hard to.

I've just started volunteering at the animal shelter. I did an orientation a few weeks ago, and I have my first volunteer day coming up on July 31st. I'm super excited!

Re: Where do you Volunteer? - July 21st 2010, 05:17 AM

Aside from volunteering my time here...
I used to do a -ton- of stuff with my church, but I've kind of moved away from that since I went off to college. Hopefully when I graduate, I'll go back to it. While I'm home, I still try to help with church events such as Faith Camp, youth events such as Box City and 30 Hour Famine, as well as volunteer my time -during- church as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, an altar server, and a Catechist.
I also do a lot of stuff with my school. I'm a member of Teachers of Tomorrow which is an organization for education majors. The organization does various things such as breakfast/lunch buddies, after school tutoring, reading buddies, and various events on campus.
Kappa Delta Pi and Sigma Alpha Pi, my honor societies, also have various activities and volunteer opportunities for members.

So basically... Just about everything I do voluntarily has something to do with kids or education.

I've volunteered at many different places.

Nursing homes - I was only 11-12, I mostly read newspapers and helped feed the patients.
Hospitals - At one hospital I worked in the gift shop, at the other I worked in the coumadin clinic answering phones, filing papers, reminded/making appointments and help patients as needed.
Habitat for Humanity - Mostly painted houses. Still go when I can.
Special Olympics - Alot of fun, hope to go back next year.
Preschool classrooms - This was also for career experience though.

I work in a charity shop, either on the till or at the back sorting and pricing things people donate. It's actually pretty fun and I get to meet some interesting people. Putting up with abusive customers isn't so great though. You'd think it being a charity shop you wouldn't get people like that but no.. Lol
