I'm doing a Bachelor of Arts in Italian and Psychology, and I've decided I want to graduate in a year and a half with a first-class honours degree. I'm going to need a bit of motivation to get me through the next couple of years so this will be it. I'm generally a B student so I'm gonig to need to push my grades up a tiny bit, but it's what I really want to achieve. I just feel really good abut deciding this. (:

I'm on a First and basically what you need to do is attend the lectures, go to the library, find books relating to what the lectures were talking about, note the title of the book and author, and then write down notes from the relevant chapters to that lecture as you read these. Couple these with the lecture notes. About 3 different books per lecture is what I do. I do this on the day that I went to the lecture - about 4 - 8 hours in the library each day.

I tend to write my lecture notes in hand, and then a couple of weeks later type them up onto my laptop and then include the notes from books. I print them off about a month before exams.

For the essay questions in finals, you support your arguments using the basic points from the lectures and the ones from the books you've read giving the names of the people you're taking it from and contrast and compare answers.

I also, in my month of studying, write out answers to all the past questions on blackboard - you'd be surprised at how many repeat themselves exactly as they are. Then in the last week or so I study these.

I also try to have all the required reading done by the mid-term so that then I have the rest of the term to effectively add to what I know and study.

Thats how I do it anyway. I also spend about a month writing those essay titles we're given - and they're basically assessed by briefly scanning through your essay and then looking at your bibliography (honestly).

So from what I've gathered, the trick to an first in a BA is to read, read and read.
