Funraising for volunteering trip abroad -

I am currently thinking of taking a trip abroad next summer with Free the Children. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_the_Children
The trip, including medical expenses, insurance, etc will be around $4,000. I'm still in the beginning process of learning information about fundraising and the country. I've never done something big like this before and my biggest worry is that I won't be able to raise enough money (I haven't advertised yet). I won't be able to put in my own money. I'm getting different ideas from people how to fundraise. They also told me that I can get people to sponsor me. Has anyone been in this situation before? I would REALLY appreciate some advise.
