A completely insane idea - January 5th 2012, 01:29 AM

I love music. It's one of the few things in my life that holds me together. Anyway, about a year ago, my friends wanted to create a song which we never got around to doing. Since then, I have been facinated by the idea of creating my own songs, possibly an entire album.

I really want to create an album with my a few of my best friends' help and they want to also, but I'm not sure how seriously they all take me. I have one friend that is starting to learn the guitar and another that is starting to learn the piano (which I am relearning just for the heck of it). I was thinking my other friend or possibly myself (not sure if I'm good enough or have the courage to) will sing. The drums and bass will be done using an online website since I don't have any friends who play either. I don't want my family to know about this because they would think it's stupid and I'm embarressed.

I guess what I am asking is, is anyone out there good at creating tunes for rock songs? I have lots of song lyrics but I suck at coming up with tunes and how to sing it. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there,
The idea is not insane at all. That is how the best bands in the world were formed. I don't have any experience with composing songs, I am a very untalented person in that respect. But I am an awesome critic. I always give honest reviews for such things and have often helped all the artistic people around me improve their creations. So if you ever want any opinions feel free to PM me. I'd be happy to help in whatever way I can

Correct me if I'm wrong on this but didn't Taylor Swift write songs before she became famous? Just a thought. It's not insane, it's being prepared.

I think this is a great idea! Dream Big. I think you should spend some time playing around with your lyrics and garageband. I personally am not good at creating rock songs, but maybe you can inspire yourself through just messing around. Or, take some music classes!

Re: A completely insane idea - January 7th 2012, 07:08 PM

Thank you so much for all the support! I'm still not entirely sure how to go about creating the songs since none of us have experience and money is kind of tight right now with my family so I can't take classes.
Pisces: I would love your opinions on the songs when we finally finish some Thank you.
Erik: That's true. While I am not a big fan of Taylor Swift's music because it is not my style, she is still a person to look up to for that reason

I think you're facing what every aspiring, new musician goes through. Getting started. It's awesome that you have a group of friends willing to support you and help you. But if you don't think that they are going to take this seriously, then talk to them. Simply say "hey, this is really important to me. I want to know that you're going to take this seriously and not bail on the group" If they say they will, believe them. If they and up screwing around.. either kick them out of the group or talk to them about their behavior. This is YOUR dream. You can make it happen. If they choose to be not committed, keep moving forward. Find new people for your group, or go solo. A lot of bands break up but the lead singer still moves forward. I understand that a lot of these people have a lot more resources, but you'll get there. Don't sell yourself short. Good luck!

You can always learn on the internet. Like there are online videos for learning math and stuff. I am sure you can find some for music too.

Thanks so much for all the inspiration I told my friends that I was serious about all this and they believe me about it now. Also, I plan to look up more tutorials on the internet really soon

Re: A completely insane idea - January 15th 2012, 03:18 PM

My ex boyfriend created an entire album by himself, writing the music and recording each instrument separately. It's a perfectly achievable goal, and a great idea!

If you're stuck on how to write a tune, google to find out some of the rules of music, like which chords go well together. One of the easiest ways to start would be finding out which groups of chords go well together and then experimenting in different ways to play them.

Anyway, good luck.
