Oh, Where To Start? -
January 22nd 2012, 03:49 AM
Ok, so I know I'm only sixteen, but I pretty much know what I want to do with my life. I've been hell-bent on becoming an Aerospace Engineer since around the end of eighth grade. I live in South Carolina, but I want to live somewhere in New England. Somewhere in Massachusetts maybe. I want to go to college at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where my uncle graduated from. While there I'd like to major in Aerospace Engineering and minor in Astrophysics. After that I'd like to get a job with Boeing or another similar company and work in their Aerospace department. This would basically equate to a job with NASA, but with much better pay ($150,000+). I'd like to send people into space with ease and low cost. I'd like to explore space myself, but I'm not that adventurous. I'd like to build "sublight" drives that could easily send a ship far away very, very fast. I'd like to build what I like to call a "Space Tether." Basically a very tall elevator to a very large "shipyard"/orbital defense platform, should we discover sentient alien life before then. There would be several of these tethers, one in each of the greatest nations on Earth. Combined with freighters with sublight drives, commerce between nations would be a cinch. I know this all sounds like it's out of a science fiction novel, but I'm a bright person and I always aim for the stars. I truly believe I can accomplish anything.
Anyway, I just needed to tell someone all that. Someone who wouldn't mock me or poke fun at my lofty ambitions. |

![]() Dude, for real. That's too cool. I wish I had the amount of ambition and dedication that you do when I was your age (or even now). That's all.
"Ignore the ramblings of the ignorant, and step on or over their crumpled bodies as you make your way to the top of the mountain. Eat upon their flesh for fuel, and, through your determination and will, banish them to obscurity and a life of complacency and self righteousness that is the hell in which they live"

Good on you! You got some great goals set out for yourself. Seriously, seeing yourself in the future and imagining your dreams coming true on paper can really fuel success.
Can I ask how you're planning to reach these goals? Have you been starting internships and such? ![]() |

*applause* YAY ENGINEERING! (I'm a nukie)
Those are great ambitions and if you work hard you definitely have a great shot. Also, engineering in general tends to be one of those GREAT majors that all the general classes are about the same, so if you decide to switch into a different branch of engineering you won't be too screwed. |
