Was this sexual assault? - December 10th 2017, 05:53 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I was about 5 or 6 at the time. An older girl who was about 10 or 11 took me into the girl's toilets, pulled her pants down and told me to touch her. I said no and she grabbed my hand and basically forced me to touch her, and then she did the same to me. As soon as she let me out, I tried to get as far away from her as I could. When I told my mum, she was furious and reported it to the school, but I don't know if anything happened after that. I didn't speak to the girl again after that but still saw her around at school up until she left to go to high school, then I never saw her again. To this very day, I still have no idea why she did it, and whether it was sexual assault. My mum said it was but I'm not sure. We were both very young and I don't know if it was even sexual, but it made me feel very uncomfortable.

It still counts as sexual assault. Many people think that because children are young, they can't be abusive, but that's not true. While some children may 'explore' each other sexually, perhaps looking and touching, this usually happens in play, or out of curiosity, but usually when they are a similar age and both children are curious. Abuse happens when there is a power imbalance- an older, more dominant child in this case. I'm not sure where you are, but in the UK, children aged 10 and over can be charged with criminal activity. And for abuse specifically, the larger the age gap (usually at least 5 years) the more severe the consequences when taking legal action.

So in your case, I do think it's assault. You were much younger than the other girl, you did say 'no' but that wasn't respected, and you were forced to touch her and she did the same to you. You also felt uncomfortable with it, and it's always good to listen to your feelings. It doesn't sound like it happened out of playful curiosity or children just being children.

When it comes to child-on-child assault, it can be complicated and this is actually an under reported and under researched area so, often there aren't many legal implications or action isn't taken for a variety of reasons (perhaps why the school might not have taken the complaint further). Another factor to take into consideration is that sometimes when children assault others, it may also be because they themselves were assaulted. Though it doesn't make what you went through any less serious.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am from the UK and I didn't know that children aged 10+ could be charged. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't overreacting by considering what happened was sexual assault, so I really appreciate your response.
