I'm having flashback - August 7th 2009, 04:10 PM

i can't sleep anymore. i keep having flashbacks about the night i got raped. it's like i'm really there. i keep having bad dreams about it too. i'm really scared.
Any advice on how to stop the flashbacks or bad dreams

hey hun.... i'm so sorry that happened to you.
and yeah i understand about the flashbacks. i get that often too but trust me, it can become easier to deal with. there're still nights when i find that i really don't want to go to sleep coz i had a nightmare the night before and didn't want it again. but still, i want you to know that what happened was NOT YOUR FAULT. the only way you can completely triumph over the ones who hurt you so bad is to live well..
so firstly, do start off with a positive attitude to concur.
then try finding music or something that could help you relax...
instead of trying to not think about what happened, try to think of nothing. think of a blank blank space and focus on your breathing.
tell yourself that you're strong. and you really are. don't ever doubt that.
sometimes talking about it can help? if there's no one you can talk to, rant and rant about everything on th maybe and cry about it. no shame in that. (:
don't give up! it'll take a lot of time to get your sleep back to normal but it's possible..

Might best advice i can give to you, try to think of something before you go to bed something good and keep that on your mind until your asleep, distract yourself by reading a book or listening to music? or as ive said PM, just leave a big rant before you go to sleep if it makes you feel better, you know i dont mind.

Hey there,

I think distracting yourself is an option; try reading a good book, watching a good movie etc. When you distract yourself before bed the dreams can sometimes not be as intense.

As for the flashbacks; I don't really know what to say about that basically, I think, it takes time to handle them. I know that sucks to hear. Something that really could help is finding someone to talk to a therapist, a close friend, or a trusted adult. Sometimes talking can help mellow the flashbacks because you start to deal with what happens (It has helped me). Do you think you could give it a try.

Also, something that could help is looking at the rape and abuse resources on this site (http://forums.teenhelp.org/f13-rape-abuse/t9323-rape-abuse-resources/). There are a lot of different resource (hotlines etc) that might be able to help you out as well.
