Creepy guy.. - September 2nd 2009, 12:33 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Hey guys,

I don't know if this is the right place, but I'm pretty sure it is.

Today, I was working at another location, as the shift leader was sick and I was the only one available. Anyways. One of the district policies are that backpacks/large bags must be left up at the front cash. So a guy came in, and very politely I said 'hello, could you please leave your bag up front, its store policy'. I was busy helping another customer, then this guy started asking me questions non-stop.

I said hang on one minute please I'm with another customer, and I can help you right after. So I go and help him. It was obvious he had a mental illness. As he was talking about his medication and things.

Anyways, after that, he started talking about wanting a girlfriend, so that he can have sex. Then asked me "your pretty young, would you date someone whose 33?"

I kind of ignored him, and turned away. Then he was checking out my butt I think because he said something about 'oo I like that being small..'

Then he goes on calling me really pretty and being like 'Brittany is a pretty name'

After I finished cashing him out, he then asked for my number.. By this time I was really upset with him.. So I snapped and said no.

What should I have done about this situation? I'm scared to work there again on Friday.. What if I see him again?

I don't know what to do..

Help please,
Brittany

Just calmly tell him you're not interested if he comes in again, and maybe keep someone else on whatever kind of duty that is with you, incase.

If you tell him no and he keeps coming in and doing this, don't you have the right to call the police. I work at McDonalds and when customers come in and act like that, not stopping after we tell them to the manager will call the authorities.
Next time he comes in I would threaten to call the police if he doesn't leave.

dont be scared girl! hold your head up high and wear your pride.
if he comes in again, call your supervisor or security.
you should never have to work in a place where you feel unsafe.

First of all, I am sorry that this happenned to you. Maybe when you go back tomorrow explain the situation to your boss and just tell him/her how you feel. Did you get the man's name? It might also be a good idea to report him to police.

No I didn't get a name or anything, he was purchasing previously rented movies.. So that can be done on a non-member account. But I did tell my co-worker what had happened (Another Shift Leader, trained as an Assistant Manager) and I work with her tomorrow..

Re: Creepy guy.. - September 5th 2009, 12:14 PM

Tell him he needs to stop because it is hurtful to you, and tell you you already have a -husband- (Lie about it, it doesn't matter). And tell him that if he continues he will need to leave the store. If he gets mad or anything, do not feel hesitant to cal PD.

When working with psychotic or mentally disabled patients, you need to run the situation and not let them try to talk you down or anything. They will feed off of you backing down. This is just my personal experience with working with these type of people on a daily basis. Most of the time you can control them by making sure they know that *you* are in charge.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. And remember, this is your store, not his.. It is your right to work there without harassment, it is his privilege to shop there and rent videos. Not a right. Good luck with your next day :]

Edit: Also, if you're highest ranking in the store at the time. What you say goes, especially in an emergency like this (Yes, I would consider it an emergency). As long as you have a reason and can back your actions, which you could in this situation if you asked him to leave. You will be fine. Just be sure to let the manager know what happened as soon as you do whatever you do. Also, you'll probably need to fill out an incident report, so they can document what happened in case he comes back. Your AM should know more about this.
