Who do I talk to? (UKers?) - May 12th 2012, 02:49 PM

I've been doing a lot of thinking recently, and I think I do want to actually speak to a professional about how I'm feeling. It's at a point where it's all just too much, and I want out. I'm just not sure how to go about this.

Who do I talk to? I mean doctor-wise. I feel so stupid asking this question haha, I've just never been told. Do I go to see my GP? Or what?

I don't want to go through school because that would involve my parents. Also, what is a doctor likely to do? What kind of help am I likely to get?

Thank you

Hey

It would probably be best to talk to your GP about how you've been feeling. Hopefully they can refer you to CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service). That may take a while, but also they may ask you to consider telling your parents as they can support you at home. It's a scary thought, but well done for wanting to get some help!

Hey,

I'm glad you're taking control, thinking about what you want and that you've decided you want help. Thats really great love.

I know it works differerntly for different areas of the uk. You do need to see yoyr go unless you want to do it through an organisation such as mind, which you can look into yourself. Your gp, where i live, would give you the option of going into adults or camhs because of your age. You can talk to them about that and like i said its different for different places. However, if you go into camhs, from my experience, they'll still need some involvement from your parents. Again, thats something you can talk to your gp about.

Camhs will do an assesment which should then be taken to a team meeting to decide whether thry feel you need to see someone and if so who.

I hope that yoy get the help you need. I'm always here.

Keep smiling,
Jessie x

I see someone from mind. I've also had contact with his manager and they have both been great. My councelor is a private councelor but volunteers at mind two days a week. He's got a BAhons, dip cbt and cert social science and specialises in psycotherapy , counceling, cbt and relationship therapy. Its basically counceling but you can self refer but they can if you want, still work along side your gp etc. I see mind once a week and email too. Its a free organisating.

POST CODE LOTTERY

Your GP may or may not give you what you want. You just damn well make sure he gives you what you need.

Google "post code lottery". A lot of GPs suck depending on the area you live in. Please don't be a victim of this bullshit, and press him or her hard to get your answers. Don't buy some sweet talk; say "piss off" to pills; and tell him you want to talk with a psychologist, a professional, instead of some cheap shit solution.

Do some research into what organisations there are that can help you, and go to the meeting knowing what you want. Be in charge of the conversation, and make it hard for them to bullshit you.

I had to go 3 years with verrucas growing on my right foot because he said it will go away by itself. No ordinary crap worked. Had to pay for private eventually. I know better what to do now when I need something from the NHS.

"I don't care about politics"
Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

Well done for wanting help in the first place sweet!

Just go and speak to your GP and be as honest with him as you can. They'll most likely refer you to CAMHS, although this could take a while depending on the waiting list and stuff xx

Just a tiny problem - I know it shouldn't matter, but I found out the other day that my GP (who I've never actually seen professionally before) is my friend's mum. Uhoh...

That shouldn't matter at all. The same policies still apply. If you dont feel comfortable seeing your gp you can see another. I know i never see my actual gp just because i get on better with another.
