Amitriptyline - May 18th 2012, 10:18 AM

Anyone else ever been on it? I've been prescribed 20mg a night for my anxiety and insomnia, and my doctor says I can double that if needed. If you've ever tried it before, what were you taking it for? did it work? did you get any side effects from it? I know weight gain is one of the potential side effects and I'm pretty worried about that because I have huge issues with my weight already. Although to be fair, if it gets rid of my anxiety and helps me sleep I'm willing to try it.

I fail to remember what dosage I was on, but I was on it for a long while for depression and insomnia, I've only recently stopped taking it. No weight change at all but I struggled to lose weight at all while on it. No side effects over the long term but it made me dizzy for the first month or so. I really would recommend trying it. :]

Keep us updated.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing if you were on it for depression, you were on a higher dose than me. It didn't make me as drowsy as I thought it would and it didn't help me sleep very much. I got 4-5 hours rather than 1-2 hours. That's obviously an improvement, but I really would like to be able to sleep properly. I'll try increasing to dose again tonight (my doctor said I could).

Re: Amitriptyline - May 20th 2012, 05:51 PM

So, I was prescribed that when I was like 12, but I remember the side effects like it was yesterday. For me, it wasn't the right choice, but sometimes doctors have to do the "throw something there and hope it sticks" method. My doctor did that with lamictal, wellbutrin, and amitriptyline. I was on high doses of lamictal and wellbutrin, but the amitriptyline was at the same dosage as yours.

I remember that I had heart murmurs and pains when I took it. Also, I have tremors and would eventually drop things.

On the weight gain, I could not tell you really. I always have had problems with weight and dieting [I will admit to that].

So, I can't inform you on anything other than what I have experienced.

As for why I was taking it, it was three things for me. 1) Anxiety 2) Insomnia 3) Stabilizer for my mood
