Problem with a task my therapist assigned? - May 21st 2012, 06:01 PM

My therapist asked me to write everything down whats going on in my head, but when I write it down it makes no sense at all and I feel like if I reword it I'm not being truthful about the thoughts in my head.

What should I do?

I had to do this once and I felt I had the same problem. Even if it is confusing and makes no sense write it how you think it. If he/she has questions they will ask.

But if they ask questions how am I meant to explain it because as soon as I write it down I forget where the train of thought even came from, so I can even explain where the random words and sentences all came from.

Write it as you think it and see where your therapist wants to take it. He or she knows the purpose of this assignment and should know what to do with whatever you take in to them. If they do ask questions just answer honestly, even if it means telling them that you really don't understand yourself.

I think the main reason a therapist would assign a task like this is just to get the thoughts OUT of your head and onto paper rather than staying bottled up inside you. It doesn't matter if they don't make sense now, maybe another time you look back at them you'll understand. Even if not, the main idea is to keep it from eating you up inside, things feel better once they are off your chest whether another person can make sense of them or not.

Whatever it is, chances are I've been there.
If I can make it out, you can too.

As other users have said, simply write the thoughts as they come into your head. For the time being, don't worry about whether or not they make sense to you or the therapist. Your therapist will decide what they want to do with the things you write so, until they tell you differently, just write exactly what comes to mind. Many times, therapists will assign this type of task simply to encourage you to get the thoughts out instead of bottling them up. If you're curious, ask your therapist what the purpose of the assignment is at your next session.

Just like everyone else has said, write it down anyways!
I'm sure that your therapist will be able to make sense of things, seeing as they were the ones who assigned it, I'm sure they know what they are looking for.

Sometimes things make more sense than we think they do.

I wish you the best of luck! I hope this assignment goes well for you.

Shelby
