Anxiety?? Or something else?? - June 5th 2012, 05:27 AM

Everywhere I go I always have to find an escape route. In every room, place or house I go into I have to make a scenario on how to get out. I also analyze people to see if they could be a threat or be a danger...I'm not claustrophobic or anything so it doesn't make any sense. I haven't had any bad things happen to me that would trigger this. I just feel like someone is always out there looking for me...I also had nightmares in the past that were really bad, but those seem to die down, that or I got use to them. But this paranoia is noticeable, my friends laugh and say that I'm a spy because I'm always looking over my back and staring at people to get a reading on them. I also have hyperactive reflexes, I don't know if that effects this or not but they do make me kind of jumpy....any ideas?

Hi Ashyy,

Planning escape routes is something common for a person that experiences agoraphobia. This means that the person does not want to be put in a situation where leaving/escaping is impossible, difficult or embarrassing/humiliating. Does this sound possible? Perhaps you are too over-conscious of your peers. This can be an extremely good thing because you're observant and prepared, but try to put yourself in their shoes. Are they really targeting you? When you leave the room, class or building, do you think they think about targeting you all day?

Deep down its like I know there probably not targeting me but something still makes me think they are....and when I'm at places I visual every situation possible and can see myself doing it, sometimes I can be thinking for minutes before my friends snap my attention back. I am also extremely jumpy, every little thing causes a big reaction from me. Do you think it could be what you just said? Or something else? I know your not a doctor but any advice works.

Hi There!

Honestly with how messed up people are nowadays (i.e rapists, murderers, etc.) I don't blame you with being careful around the people you see. You never know if they may be like that. There is nothing wrong with being observant, and if your friends make fun of you because of that you should certainly brush them off.

The making escape routes does seem like a paranoia and you may want to go talk to a doctor about that.

I hope all goes well!
