Thumbs up Help For Borderlines! Started DBT... - June 21st 2012, 03:32 PM

Hey everyone

I just wanted to update everyone with my progress, perhaps it's also of interest for those also suffering from BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) who're curious about the psychological side of treatment.

I'm lucky to be with a Personality Disorder (PD) service that covers my borough, I have an individual session with my psychologist for 1h, then (happens to be same day) evening DBT group for 2h, held by 2 PD psychs. It's in a building within the grounds of the nearest psychiatric hospital, and very peaceful.

We started with Mindfulness, before the first DBT module, and as part of it, and i found it pretty helpful. I'll post more about this later.

Has anyone else been in DBT, even CBT and individual therapy for BPD (as the psychotherapeutic side of treatment)? How were your experiences?

Michy.

So darkness I became.

I'm in DBT at the moment. It's taken me about 12 weeks, but I think I'm finally starting to be able to use the skills. I think it could be really helpful for me. I find it insanely difficult though. So far I've done emotion regulation, distress tolerance and mindfulness. What module aill you be doing first?

I'm glad to hear you've been getting help! Deciding to get help is a very important step in recovery.
I don't have BPD, so this question doesn't really apply to me, but I'm currently in CBT for my OCD. Had I not been on medication for a long time before I started CBT, I don't think I would've been able to do any of my "assignments." But, I was on medication for about 3-4 months before switching therapists and going to one that specializes in OCD and CBT treatment, so I do think that medication and therapy should both be used to treat someone with mental illness. Because of the meds I take, I find assignments much easier to do, so although there is one specific topic I HATE bringing up in therapy, overall I find my assignments to be do-able.
I do know, though, that the assignments I'll get in the future on my feared topic will be much harder.

I've done CBT and absolutely hated it. I know absolutely everything about it, yet I find it stupid. I hate the whole 'circle' or 'hot cross bun' thing.

Though I would like to try DBT, and am hoping to be referred to that after I leave my current group therapy. I know there is a personality disorder service near me, but don't know much about it. Will be having either some kind of trauma or DBT therapy soon I hope. I've done everything else and am desperate to have something that's actually going to help.

Keep us updated on how it goes

Hey Ella, i've seen you around before! My first DBT Module, at the point i've entered in the 1 year cycle, is Interpersonal Skills.

I really think it's going to help me!

I used to take DBT therapy... It was in group form, and my extreme social anxiety kinda prevented me from even trying. Needless to say, I quit after a short amount of time.

I'm doing DBT, I'm actually nearly finished. Where I am, we do the modules twice and I have nearly done that now so I have been doing it almost a year. I think the most useful for me is distress tolerance and interpersonal stuff. Then possibly emotional regulation wa quite helpful

I did DBT when I was an in-patient for three hours every week for twelve weeks. I quite liked doing the emotional regulation and distress tolerence. I struggled to do mindfullness!
