Everyone will leave me.. - June 25th 2012, 06:47 AM

I think I am dealing with compulsive lying.. and I know that if I get professional help they will tell me that I need to tell the people that I've lied to that I lied... but they will leave me. They'll stop talking to me. I can't... handle that. I don't know what to do. Should I try to just stop the lying on my own, or get professional help anyways? Fessing up about the lies just... isn't an option.

Well, supposedly if you get professional help, it should be confidential, so you could work on being as honest as possible from now on. You shouldn't have to tell anyone anything.

I think you should try to get help. Stopping something on your own is really a hard thing to do, but it isn't impossible. But professional help maybe the best thing for you.

I wrote an article for TeenHelp's Avatar Magazine a while back about compulsive lying. You're welcome to read it here if you'd like - it might give you a few things to think about! =)

If you see a psychological professional who views compulsive lying as an "addiction," and that professional follows a 12-step model... then yes, you will be encouraged to "come clean" with the people you have lied to. Each professional is going to treat the compulsive lying in different ways, though, so I wouldn't assume anything just yet. Even if all the professionals insist that you "come clean" with the people you have lied to, that doesn't mean you will have to do it right away. You can receive some coaching on how to do it, and how to handle any possible backlash you might face. There are ways to break the bad news to people that will reduce the possibility of being shunned. That, of course, will also depend on how severe the lying was, and on how compassionate the people you lied to are.
