do I have pyromaniac? - June 29th 2012, 05:56 PM

so it happened 3 hours ago.. I found some useless papers then.. I think "hey what if I burn it?" it happened since 6 months ago... but I don't really have the urge to burn anything..
until last week I started to burn papers that I found useless.. some plastics and anything that burn-able
and I really set the fire.. and my whole room full of smoke now(I live in a dorm like.. and yeah they don't have smoke detector)

just with one match I could burn a stack(around 30 pieces of papers).. no oil or something close to that.. just one tiny match(the stick thingy that can light fire.. a match.. right?)

and what I feel right now? "oh my god.. what if someone outside notice the smoke and start to assume that I have short circuit or something like that?"
when I realize what I am thinking... I get scared.. I thought.. someone should feel "it's dangerous" or something like that

I feel calm.. and at peace when I see fire..

but what will happened? I think it's not normal.. but idk.. it's not that dangerous

Re: do I have pyromaniac? - June 30th 2012, 01:12 AM

According to Wikipedia, "Pyromania in more extreme circumstances can be an impulse control disorder to deliberately start fires to relieve tension or for gratification or relief."

"Pyromania and pyromaniacs are distinct from arson, the pursuit of personal, monetary or political gain, or the intent to inflict harm for advantage or revenge."

"Pyromaniacs start fires to induce euphoria, and often fixate on institutions of fire control like fire stations and firefighters. Pyromania is a type of impulse control disorder. Pyromaniac - someone obsessed with setting fire to property."

So based on what Wikipedia says, you might be a pyromaniac. However the best way to find out for sure (and to get help), is to see a professional. You could go to your G.P. and get referred, but if you can go straight to a counselor or psychologist it would probably be more beneficial to you.

You're setting fires safely (so you say), so that in itself is at least positive. You need to find even safer ways to make fires (for example, in a fireplace, or a firepit, or some other place intended for that purpose), and stick to that if you're going to be doing this regularly.

Personally, I've only ever set ONE fire, it was very impulsive, and it put a lot of people at risk - I didn't consider that when I was starting the fire though, you seem to have a bit more presence of mind.

However I still think you should seek help for this in real life, whilst you still have quite a good measure of control over it.

but.. it's like 3 times per week..

and I'm scared to see professional help.. since well they keep record on the client and some day when I look for job they find it.. and make big issue on my problem

I have anger issue and when I see fire.. it's soo calming.. until I realize the amount of smoke I made..(and yeah I smile when I see fire)

From what I know, pyromania is often done intentionally and there is an immediate relief or gratification from it. I'm not sure helping you to relax would suffice because that feeling can come from almost anything, whether it be beating up a pillow, using a punching bag, dressing in the opposite sex's clothing, etc... . It would depend more on how much it relieves the anger and evokes other feelings, such as sexual ones. I don't think you would be considered a pyromaniac because you admitted elements of the fire (i.e. the smoke) scare you and make you worried. Many people flock to fires, similar to how a fly will go to a light source, yet few of those people are pyromaniacs.

It's up to you whether you wish to seek counseling, I'm not going to tell you whether you should or shouldn't.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
