Losing Myself - July 5th 2012, 01:00 AM

Over the past year, I've had increasing bouts of memory loss. When I noticed it before, it seemed to be triggered by sleep patterns and stress. Now, I can no longer pinpoint the exact cause. Things are so hard to keep to myself, but I have to, no matter how much I'm hurting inside because I trust nobody. Nobody really cares, and I wish I could afford to lie about that. I also wish I could simply be allowed to live my life as I please... I don't know how I'm going to get a job like this, losing up to 8 years of my life at a time. I don't think medication is available for this sort of thing, and I don't think it's neurological. But then.. I don't even know who I really am right now. I'll gain back many memories from the past, then lose it all in another bout. I just don't know anymore... I just don't know what to do.

I am not alone- not beaten down just yet.. I am not afraid of the voices in my head. Down the darkest road, something follows me! I am not alone.. 'Cause misery loves my company!

Hey Christian
I can totally understand how frustrating and stressful this must be for you! Sometimes when we're stressed we are more likely to forget things, but if you feel you're losing your memory at such an abnormal rate for a young person, there could be a neurological problem.
The best thing you can do is to see your doctor and they may refer you to a specialist. I'm not sure if there is a medicine for this, but a health professional will be able to help you pin point the reason for your memory loss and will be able to assist you in some way and support you.
I really hope things improve for you soon.
Amy

I can lose 8 years of my life at a time.. and that's going all the way back to when I was around 10 years old. Anyway, I hate doctors with a passion. Most of them are idiots that try to blame all of my problems on my "depression" (which I do NOT have). My "depression" is a symptom of a bigger problem. And futhermore, I would rather jump off a bridge than I would to tell my parents anything that has to do with my personal health. I have unaddressed circulatory and reproductive problems because they don't care. Trust me, they've heard me rant on these things for a long time. Nothing has been done. They don't listen and they don't care.

Your parents are required to obtain the medical care you need. If they don't, it's considered child neglect, and you can report that to CPS (Child Protective Services). I realize you hate doctors with a passion, but not ALL doctors are like that, just as all parents aren't like your parents, and all teenagers aren't like you. It's really not fair to doctors to make a broad judgement of that nature... and it's not fair to YOU to deny yourself medical care, if it is needed. In this case, none of us can tell you how to solve the memory loss problem. It could be neurological, or it could be psychological, but you won't know which it is and how to deal with it if you don't get help.

Our parents have almost already been sued for medical neglect before.. Nothing has ever been done about that either. I just don't know; I don't think we can get access to healthcare since the nearest town is 20 minutes away and we don't have the money to pay for it ourselves.

I guess the only two options you are left with is to sit and hope it suddenly improves or see at least some type of health professional who is able to lead you in the right path toward getting tests or treatment. Losing your memory like this seems to be a bit of a complicated thing that could have many potential causes, so we can't really suggest anything as we're not medical professionals.
I've been in the situation where your parents are negligent about health care - I've only just succeeded in convincing my mum to take me to a psychologist after a few years of asking.
If your parents still won't help you after you expressing the urgency of the matter to them, look up walk-in health clinics, youth centres or community health centres that you can reach by public transport. If they refer you to another doctor which requires the assistance of your parents, ask them if they can try and convince them. If your parents still won't budge, at least you have the support of another adult in taking the next action, such as calling CPS.
Also, if money is an issue, there are government-funded services that can help, I know in Australia we have medicare, it might be called something like that where you live. Money is not a reason to stop you getting essential health care.
I know how hard is when your parents are like this, but don't give up! It's the only way you will receive an explanation about your memory loss.
Take care

I can't go anywhere on my own. I have no car or job to get a car because the nearest town is 20 minutes away. It's obvious that this situation is hopeless.
