Question Imaginary Friends.....?!?!? - July 19th 2012, 07:58 PM

Okay, let me just say Im 14 and have delt with...alot...
Anyways, I have 4 imaginary friends.
Caleb,16 years old, like a bad influencer
Eve,20 years old, like the mother ive always wanted
Alice,4, like a little sister
and Victoria, my age, like a bestfriend.

Anyways, why do i always see them? Is that normal? I cant say goodbye to them...they are like my family. They look normal and sound normal and ARE normal.....but only I can see them.

Re: Imaginary Friends.....?!?!? - July 19th 2012, 08:18 PM

Hey,
I'm sorry that you are struggling with this.
I am not a doctor so I cannot diagnose you with anything, but to me this sounds like you are having some schizophrinia episodes.

So no, this isn't "normal", but a lot of people deal with these issues.. more than you think.
But you need to get treated for this, as scary as that may sound. I would try making a doctors appointment and tell them about what you are experiencing. The doctors only want to help, so there is no need to be afraid.

I know you may not want them to leave, but it's not healthy to keep going on pretending that it's okay and not get the help you need and deserve.

You deserve healthy relationships with real people, and your doctor will be able to help you make a plan from there.

I hope this helped, and I wish you the best of luck.

Shelby

Maybe you can try doing activities outside of school? You are bound to meet someone there.

Also, keep your mind open to meeting new people. You might be surprised!

Re: Imaginary Friends.....?!?!? - July 19th 2012, 11:49 PM

The first thing that I'm going to say is that I also had imaginary friends when I was fourteen, but the difference is that I didn't know they were imaginary. I thought that they were real people. The fact that you know they're imaginary is good. Very good actually.

However, from personal experience I can tell you that this isn't "healthy". It's honestly best that you talk to someone about this. Whether it be your parents or your doctor or anyone at all. You need to make this known to someone else. I know it seems scary, and I know how hard it is to think of getting rid of them, I really do.. I was torn apart to get rid of my "friends" but I know now that it's for the best. It's not healthy for you at all to have them.

And you can definitely keep them without keeping them. Like for me, I journal a lot to deal with my depression and anxiety. And in my journal, I pretend like I'm writing a letter to one of my "friends", and I just tell them what's going on and how I'm feeling. I know that they're not real, and I know that I had made them up, but I definitely missed having someone to talk to all the time so now I just write to them in my journal. It helps me a lot actually. It makes me feel like I still have someone to talk to, but it's different. It's muuuch healthier for me too.

If you need anything, please free to message me.
Take care of yourself. <3

See though, what troubles me is that she has different names and personalities for them all.

I will admit, my dog is something of an imaginary friend to me. I oftentimes talk to it as though it is a human being who has a true understanding of what I say to it. However this may also simply be a personality quirk of mine (as I suspect it is.)

On the other hand, having multiple "friends" with whom you keep regular "contact" with is very unusual for this age. Rather than tossing around terms like "multiple personality disorder" or "schizophrenia" I'm going to only say this:

Such things can be brought up by anything from stress and pressure, to an actual mental disorder. Continuing this behavior may effect your ability to distinguish reality from imagination in the long-term, specially if you've had most of these "friends" from a younger age. If you've only recently developed them, that is even more troubling. I would immediately "say goodbye" to your "friends" and move on, if you find yourself unable to do this I would seek professional help as this behavior is not natural or healthy.

That's the thing, you have to "say goodbye" right now, or else seek professional help. These characters are not healthy.

Stress can cause any amount of mental disorder, and apparently that was the case with you. Your imaginary friends are a coping mechanism, but they need to go ASAP or else they will stay around, potentially forever, and they may effect your ability to distinguish reality from imagination. I cannot stress how important it is to get help.

UnicornGurl: I understand, but it's as if you find out that friend has been injecting cocaine into your eyelids as you sleep each night. These "friends" are harming you. If you don't get rid of them at once, I have a feeling you'll make excuses to hold on forever. If you can't do that, you do need a therapist who will be better equipped to help you.

I am in no way a professional, but I do know that imaginary friends after the onset of puberty are not a laughing matter. Especially as most serious mental issues are developed during teen years.

I wouldn't recommend that! I don't mean to offend, and I mean this in the best way possible: You're in a fragile mental state right now. The last thing you need is seeing all the disorders you may have. This type of problem is in many different kinds of mental disorders, and simply reading over the symptoms may actually make you display more symptoms of that disorder. You can literally drive yourself mad with worry.

Yes, that's why the first thing that I think you should do is make a doctors appointment before doing any research!
