First Session with the new counselor - August 8th 2012, 07:43 AM

It didn't hit me how much I miss, and am going to miss Vanessa, untill I met with Elizabeth. I really don't like her. I know its only the first week, and I know I have to give her a chance, but she just seems like the polar opposite of Vanessa. I feel like she took things way too fast, And it seems like she just thinks I am overreacting, or that my problems aren't as bad as it could be. Also, she says things as if she is right all the time and there is no other possible opinion or explanation. Also, she wants me to get a "depression analysis" which I don't need, because I'm not depressed.

Sorry, kind of just a rant.... :/

Hi Tamsin.

I can understand that it can be hard changing counsellors (I've been there plenty of times!) However, like you said, it was the first session. Give them some time, get to know them and their way of working and give it a shot. If after several weeks or so you feel like it is not helping you, talk to them about it and be honest - see if you can find a new way of working together to help you in the best possible way. If things still don't go well, talk to her about seeing someone else. But remember these things take time so give her a chance. You never know, she might really be able to help you.

I recently changed counsellors too, and like you I had doubts about my new counsellor - and at first it as strange but there are ways to let them know what's going on, I have a book / diary/journal I write things down in and this week I showed them my book with everything in it I had wrote down. maybe you could do this and show them the book each time you see them ? Stay with them for a month or two and see how it goes, if you're still not sure maybe ask to change counsellors ? I've really only just started opening up to my new one about things, give it some time and see how it goes. I didn't think my current counsellor would be able to help me but now I think they might be able to. Remember the more you tell them and open up to them the more they will be able to help you. Give them a chance.
