MY mood swings are everywhere. The hospital said i have bipolar but they cant diagnose me with it until im 18 and im only 14 now.

My meds quietapine arn't working. They did the first time i was on it, then i went on a different med, and now im back on it, im stuck, im everywhere.

For example yesterday, at 3- 3.45 i was in the woods selfharming, at 4.30 i was laughing on the phone to my friend.

i dont know what to do, any suggestions?

Hi there.

Although Bipolar disorder can be diagnosed in teenagers, it's not very common. From what I have read this is because children don't show the same patterns of behaviour as adults do. Bipolar apparently can often be mistaken for other mental illnesses such as ADHD. Some of the symptoms of BPD can typically be seen in children and teenagers such as hyperactivity, fidgetiness, as well as early onset signs such as bed wetting and daydreaming. Other symptoms such as aggressive behaviour could be an indication of another mental health illness to. I think its harder to diagnose a child because of how different a child's behaviour is to an adults. If a child/teenager is diagnosed, it could take many appointments of assessments such as family history, medical examinations and so on.

I think its positive you're on medication. How long have you been on it for? It might be you have not been on it long enough yet for it to have any positive affects. It might be that this medication is not right for you or that you need a higher dose. If you're worried the medication is not helping you, I suggest you bring this up with the person who prescribes you it which I assume is your doctor or a psychiatrist.

I was also wondering whether you're getting any therapy? With a combination of both the correct medication and therapy, the problems you are having will be manageable. For now, its making sure you engage with people and are open to the problems you have such as worries about the meds not working in order to find the best and right treatment for you. Sometimes finding the right therapy and meds can be frustrating but if you stick at it and work with people, you'll get there.

If there's anything you ever want to talk to us about, know that you are more than welcome. We'll try our best to help and support you.

Keep smiling!
