Question Could I be schizophrenic? - January 12th 2013, 08:31 PM

Or something else...
When it's dark out I don't like going into rooms with open blinds. It's like someone is watching me. That face scares me. It can see me. I don't know if I am neurotic or schizophrenic or something...

Hey there! Welcome to TH! I hope you find the site useful

It seems to me that you are feeling paranoid, or you're experiencing an anxiety reaction. Schizophrenia on the other hand, is a mental illness that involves symptoms of psychosis. You can read a bit more about it here.

If you are seriously concerned that you may have a mental illness (such as schizophrenia), then I highly encourage you to talk to your GP to get a referral to a psychologist, who will be able to assess you. If you do display symptoms of a major mental illness such as schizophrenia, then you may need a referral to a psychiatrist for further assessment. Only these professionals will be able to say for certain if you have a mental illness.

Are there any more symptoms that are concerning you, that may help us give you more information?

Take care <3

Re: Could I be schizophrenic? - January 13th 2013, 03:50 PM

When my mum goes out at night, I'm scared she will be in an accident, or a fight, or die in a car crash.
I just had to stick a post-it over that scary face.
I'm really worried about death, and losing my friends and family.
I went through a faze of thinking someone had put a camera in my room and was watching me.
I sometimes wonder if my friends are just pretending to like me, but are being mean about me behind my back.

Sounds like paranoia when you mention cameras and friends.. I used to suffer from thinking friends are just pretend, and thought cameras down my street were following me. Doc said I was slightly paranoid n that once you know your doing it you can work with it not fight against it.. just made me a more weary person. Agree with just having a chat with your doc about it . Weird talking to them n at first I came out thinkin he didn't have a clue what he was on about n that he was jus like 'the rest' but slept on it n he was right

It sounds a little less like paranoia and a little more like you can get very anxious about certain situations. No one on TH can diagnose you with anything, so your best bet is to talk to your general practitioner about how you feel and see if they think you should be referred to a psychologist.

That being said, everyone gets anxious about things. People worry if there family will be safe when driving at night, people worry that perhaps a friend doesn’t like them, people get sad when they think about love ones dying, those are all normal feelings. Anxiety is a natural emotion that lets us know we might be in a dangerous situation, or that someone we love is in a dangerous situation. Anxiety itself is not bad, but, too much anxiety is. If your worrying is so bad that you can’t go to school, work, hang out with friends, if you are too afraid to go to sleep, if you are so anxious you don’t eat, those are all examples of where you would need to go and see a psychologist.

So if you feel like these feelings are ruining your life, you need to talk to someone.

I agree with Lizzie, it sounds more like anxiety than paranoia. It's normal to be anxious about your family and friends but if you feel like its having a negative effect on your life then I would urge you to seek professional help but until then I would maybe look up some breathing exercises and do things that help calm you down.
I don't think you have schizophrenia but as Lizzie said, none of us are mental health professionals and even if we were we couldn't diagnose you over the internet.
