Avoidance Personality Disorder - February 10th 2013, 02:32 AM

I have been struggling with anxiety for a few years previously. Now, I have just been diagnosed with Avoidance BPD. The doctor gave an encouraging talk that with therapy and meds I would be able to have this under control in time.

However, when I googled this I find the outlook somewhat less hopeful. The statement I find most is "People with this disorder may develop some ability to relate to others, and this can be improved with treatment. "

I was wondering if anyone that has avoidance BPD or any BPD could share some experiences, results, thoughts or any comment on this. I'm a little freaked at the moment. I keep thinking that I'm going to end up being known as "that strange old lady that lives at the end of the street"

Hi there Erika

I've just been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder so I can definitely relate to how you are feeling! I saw a psychiatrist on Thursday morning and he said to me that even without treatment, it is something that often goes away on its own (in time). With the right help and support from others, in the future you will find that you can probably get most of the symptoms under control too.

Have a look at this link - it's a well known mental health charity in the UK and it is reliable. It backs up what the psychiatrist told me and is reassuring The site also talks about a variety of different treatments that are available, do any of those sound like they could work for you? It sounds like your doctor is supportive and they will be able to really help you. Talk to them about your anxieties and worries about the diagnosis - they should be able to put your mind at rest.

Essentially, it will go over time and the different therapies or treatments available will just speed it up! So it isn't as scary as it sounds, trust me. I know it's hard to think about and accept, but things will improve and they will get better. It will be okay.

Shoot me a VM/PM if you ever want to chat about anything and look after yourself,

Anna

No problem lovely! You definitely aren't on your own

I know how you feel. Have you been able to speak with your doctor yet? x
