This is really strange to me I feel no emotion right now what so ever - February 26th 2013, 05:29 AM

This is creepy. I mean I guess I should be thankful I'm not feeling irritable, or sad, or angry, but its like I feel absolutely nothing. How is this even remotely possible? I just got home from work, and usually when I get out of work I'm so angry and frustrated. I work at mcdonalds mind you, so its stressful. We even had a bus today and everyone was acting crazy like they had no idea what they were doing. At the time I Felt like the only sane person there. Now I feel nothing. It's creeping me out. Like I'm here physically. I see colors, shapes, and I hear things, but mentally its like a black space. Nothing there. How long is this going to last?

I'm still not feeling anything this morning. Its weird. How long is this supposed to last. I mean I know posting this makes me supposedly concerned, but consciously I don't have that worried feeling in the pit of my stomach. This is all so confusing and hard to explain. Its like I taste the food I'm putting in my mouth, deep down I know its tasty and I enjoy it, but I don't. I could probably eat chocolate and not enjoy it. I even tried watching the ending to Marley and Me. I mean, for godsakes that's usually a guarantee for the waterworks. Then I watched to funny scenes from two of my favorite movies, and nothing. I like not feeling angry, or upset, but nothing at all, I don't like that either. Or I think I don't like it. I don't know. Like I said I really have no idea whats going on.

A lot of things can cause someone to feel emotionally "blank" or "empty," Joanie. One way to approach this situation is to think of emotional "blankness" or "emptiness" as a coping mechanism. If you are frequently experiencing negative emotions (ex. sadness, anger, worry/frustration), then you may unconsciously choose to experience nothing at all. Eliminating some of the stress in your life could help immensely. While you may not be able to quit your job at this point in time, you can find enjoyable activities that allow you to de-stress (ex. yoga, exercise, reading/writing/whatever creative outlet you prefer). Other changes diet- and sleep-wise can also make a huge difference - if you aren't getting your fruits/veggies, if you're taking in a lot of sugar/caffeine, and if you're not getting 8+ hours of sleep, then start working toward making lifestyle changes at those levels!

This could also be related to a mental illness, but honestly, if this is the first time you've been concerned about emotional "blankness" or "emptiness," my guess is that this is more of a coping mechanism than a side effect of a mood/personality disorder. If you have suspicions that this could be indicative of a mental illness, then I would suggest talking to your regular doctor first (to rule out medical conditions, ex. hormonal imbalances/thyroid issues), and asking for a referral to a psychological professional for further assessment.
