Could odd fetishes be related to mental health issues? - May 4th 2014, 07:07 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Err.. I am sexually thrilled by many odd things and I recently read that it could be related to my mental health or a trigger due to something from my past. Also note that I have depression, yet I still haven't been able to figure out why exactly. I suppose I should say my strongest fetishes: blood, cutting, rape scenarios, murder (more specifically on how someone would murder me), abuse, and pain.

I'm in the boat with you for most of those as well. People who say it's related to past history or mental illness are deluding themselves with Freudian bullshit. The fact of the matter is that we just like certain things for a number of different reasons. Sometimes it's just nature, and we're going to get nowhere until people can accept that we don't have to have something wrong with us just because we have strange kinks.

So in short, it can be related, but it probably isn't. Correlation does not imply causation.

It might be related, but it doesn't have to be. Fetishes are a weird thing, and just cause something like that turns you on, doesn't mean you have something wrong in your head. You can be just fine, maybe you just have tastes like this.

It can have something to do with your past, but again : sexuality can develop for a long time. I don't think you have to worry about this.

I can't comment on the fetish part, but I just wanted to mention that you don't need some sort of event to cause depression, it can be a chemical balance. You don't necessary have a "why" for depression.

I slightly disagree. I can link a lot of my fetishes to past events and attitudes. I wouldn't say mental illness though, everyone has weird kinks

Take as long as you need.
