Question how did you get help? - December 29th 2014, 05:51 AM

I want to get help. I think I have depression and maybe Social anxiety. I want also want help to stop cutting and when I get upset and try not to cut I feel and want to hurt myself any other way I can and wind up scratching myself, hitting my head on something and you get the picture... and more than anything I want to get rid of the suicidal thoughts.
I want to go to my doctor (family doctor) but I'm too scared to. How did you get help?

Re: how did you get help? - December 29th 2014, 06:35 AM

My parents first found out about my struggles a few years ago, and I saw a few therapists but was unsuccessful with making progress because the therapists were not experienced with what I was going through. I didn't start getting help until almost a year ago when I started seeing a therapist who specializes in the issues that I struggle with. I researched therapists in my area, found one I was interested in seeing, and had one of my parents contact my therapist. If you're interested in looking for a therapist and you live in the US, you can try this. I found my therapist there.

I think it's wonderful that you want to get help, and going to your family doctor sounds like a good start. You should be able to speak to your doctor without your parents in the room if you'd like to. Keep in mind that you don't have to verbally express what you're going through if you're not comfortable with that. You can write a note as well, and that's beneficial for a lot of people.

In the meantime, take a look at the alternatives thread. There's a lot of alternatives on here, and some are bound to help you out!
