I don't have a hobby. - July 21st 2017, 02:56 PM

I don't believe that I have any true hobbies. Plain and simple. And now I'm feeling guilty about it.

Most of what I do outside of school is stay glued to technology, since I was fascinated with it from a young age. My sisters, step-mother, and others have criticized me for it, and now I'm not entirely sure what to do. I am required to break for several hours today by my step-mother, as she points out that I can be on my computer for upwards of 12 hours, or half an entire day, and it's 'unhealthy'. She recommended that I read a book, since she's a reader, but I have none around. I always found it lame until my last year of middle school.

So now I'm wondering what am I supposed to do? I'm not sure what I like at all... I know it's negativity, as my step-mother has pointed out, but I cannot help it.

Hey there
There's nothing bad about not knowing what you like or don't like. You can't know until you try it.
So maybe just try a few things and see if they are something for you. There are a lot of different hobbys you could try.
Since your step-mother recommended reading, maybe you could ask her if she knows a book you would like (that is, if you're not compleately against reading, if you really don't like it there's no point forcing yourself). I'm sure she would be really happy to recommend one to you are go to a library or bookstore with you to find one.
Appart from that, maybe you can just ask friends or others what they like to do. Hobbys are a lot of fun, if you can do them with your friends.
Just keep your eyes open for new things. Everything can be a hobby. Maybe its model airplanes, or drawing or since you like technology, maybe you can make that a screen time free hobby. I know a lot of people who build electric circuits and do all kind of funny stuff with them.

It's ok to give in to an urge or make a mistake. You are only human and we all have our flaws. We all have our weak moments and we all make mistakes. Thats what makes us human.
Thats what makes us unique and beautiful

Courage isn't always a loud roar. Sometimes it is a quiet whisper at the end of a day saying: Tomorrow I will try it again!

Hey there,

No need to feel guilty about not having any hobbies. Itís not a Ďrequirementí but it can be good for your mental health to balance school and work, with a social life or some form of hobby.

Thereís nothing wrong with spending time using technology, but itís good to balance this with some physical activity too. Iím wondering what things you do when you use technology? This may help to give you some inspiration as to what hobbies you might want to take up. For example, if you use social media a lot to chat to others, perhaps arrange to meet up with others every so often. If you play games, then look into clubs in your area. If you are creative, then you may want to look into things like photography, film making, coding etc.

It's okay, if you are not into reading. Ultimately, a hobby is something that you do for pleasure and entertainment, for yourself. Sometimes itís just a matter of finding something that interests you. If you are stuck for ideas, you can always look up lists of hobbies and see if anything appeals to you.
