Intake Appointments? - October 11th 2009, 03:00 AM

So this is about my friend again (I'm sure you're all tired of this by now but I need more help with him).
His first appointment for this new therapist and stuff is this coming friday and he's really anxious about it. I know him fairly well and I know that if he knows what will happen and can plan things out he feels a bit better. So I'm just wondering what exactly happens at an intake appointment? What kind of questions do they ask you and stuff like that.
If anyone knows it would help a lot.

i just went to my first appt last month and let me tell you, if I can do it anyone can! =] I was really scared but thankfully a friend went with. my first appt I had to fill out paperwork, answer question and met the person, that was it. I did it and glad I did. it was hard but I survived. =] good luck!!!

I remember my first appointment with CAMHS. I think they called that an intake appointment. Like your friend, I was feeling really nervous about what would happen and what it could all lead to. Hopefully this will help you though!

When I turned up I was told to sit down in the waiting room for a short while (in reality it was about 5 minutes). They called my name and I went into this large room. They basically told me why I was there (that I had been to see the doctor, and he had referred me the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)). They then asked me a series of questions from this sheet and started ticking boxes.

The questions ranged from things such as "Have you ever had thoughts of suicide, Have you ever tried to hurt yourself?" to "How would you rate yourself emotionally at the moment". From my mental health knowledge now, I understand they were asking me questions that covered OCD, Depression, Schizophrenia / Psychosis etc.

After that they told me a possible diagnosis and said that I would need to come back for CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). That's basically what happened. It isn't something you should be scared about, although that is natural.
