Question ??? - October 13th 2009, 11:19 PM

What does a counselor do? Just asks you questions about what is going on? Or do you have to tell them what's going on if you don't want to? And for the first visit, do they need to talk to my parents and me, just my parents, or just me?

I gots...

Re: ??? - October 14th 2009, 12:09 AM

im 18 and I just started going to counseling. my first appt I went with a friend, my parents only know about it because their insurance is paying for it. I had to fill out paperwork and the lady asked me some questions. my second appt she asked me more questions and then she gave me an assignment to do at home. my 3rd is appt is next week. you dont have to answer any questions that you dont feel comfortable answering. I had to answer the questions that were asked of me because it was part of the intake process.

My experience with a councilor was really good. In high school I had some problems with SI and depression and they helped me a ton. (It was my plea bargain to be let out of the hospital but it was really helpful.) We actually got to be really good friends. At the end of the session she would bring my mom in and moderate a talk with her. Sometimes she did it for my whole family. It was really really helpful. Sometimes she even made me chi tea when it was cold out. Even after I went to college I still had sessions with her when I needed an objective third party opinion. She was really great because it was a really low pressure environment. The other thing that was great was that she was really on my side which I think is sometimes hard to find.
I hope that your experience with a councilor is just as great as mine is. If you have any questions or just want to talk PM me anytime!
Best of luck,
Katie
