Am I Doing Something Wrong? - October 25th 2009, 07:33 PM

A few days ago, another of my friends told me she had been diagnosed with clinical depression and was being treated, making it three of my friends that have it. This worries me, because I feel as if I'm attracting these people to me and they'd be better if I wasn't friends with them. When I see that there's something really wrong with someone, I HAVE TO know what's wrong, even though depressed friend #2 ended up starting me on SI, which continues today especially with anything regarding depression and suicide. I used to be happy, but have been sinking lower and lower. I shouldn't have put myself into these situations, but impulsively do anyway. I do go to a consoler, but not often enough. I feel as if I myself may be becoming depressed, and I have thought of how I could possibly kill myself. I'm sure there would be something else to say in my confusing monologue, but do you have any suggestions for me?

Hi,

You need to know that what they are feeling isn't because of you. If you are, indeed, friends with several people with these kinds of problems that is more likely due to the fact that they feel you are someone they can talk to and that they feel safe with.

I personally have several friends with various problems such as those your friends have, and it can be hard to stay happy when you are surrounded by people that depend on you to help them with their happiness or people that aren't happy the same way you want to be, but it is possible. The fact that you put yourself in these situations has probably complicated things for you, yes - but it also shows that you are a very good friend to those around you for not having just up and left them. Congratulate yourself on that, being a good friend and someone that people trusts, even if it is hard at times, is a very good trait.

If you don't feel like you see your counselor enough, have you considered talking to him/her about more frequent meetings? If not, that might be a good idea. Tell him/her what you said in this post and say that you would like it if you could meed more frequently.

Further than that I could say that if you think it is too heavy to be around the depressed people that you know constantly you could try meeting some new people as well. Now, I'm not saying leave your old friends, but trying to also find new friends through for example some kind of club or activity that you like might be a good idea. Doing things that you like will maybe also help take your mind off things.
