Panic attack - November 29th 2009, 06:37 PM

Hey I was wondering If this sounds like a panic attack to you guys

I was sitting in school and got called down to the office, I never get called down to the office. By time I got to the office I was hyperventilating and my hands were sweating and I was shaking really bad. They told me I needed to go to confrence room A. They took me there and left me. There was a lady sitting at the table and as soon as I saw her I started crying I didn't know who she was. I sat down in the corner and started crying and continued to shake. It took me about six minutes to calm down and begin speaking with the women, who once I stopped crying explained to me that she was the P.S. worker.

Does this sound like a panic attack?

Hey Trish,

From what you've described, it does sound like you had a panic attack.
Maybe try thinking about how you can cope if you have another one?
Like making sure that you focus on your breathing completely and try to breathe slowly. The more you focus on that, the less likely you're going to be thinking of the thing that make you panic.

Hey there,

That does sound like a typical panic attack. You shouldn't worry though! There are lots of things that you can do to prevent it. You need to find what triggered the anxiety attack, which I think in your case sounds like you was worried by being called to the office?

Just a bit of simple knowledge I guess is a cycle:

- How we think affects,
- How we feel which affects
- How we behave which affects
- How we think etc.

If you think negative (Like being called to the office is a bad thing), you will feel negative (Anxious and worried), and will then behave negative (an anxiety attack). However if you think positive (Maybe something good could be waiting for you at the office), you will feel positive (curious, excited) and behave positive (No anxiety attacks).

If you DO get an anxiety attack, if you put a paper bag over your mouth, or cup your hands around your mouth you will start to breathe in carbon dioxide, and breathe normally again.

I know it can be very scary at first, but at least next time you will know how to deal with it, and what it actually is. Good luck!
