Do I take meds? - December 21st 2009, 11:57 PM

So I was recently diagnosed with clinical depression, and apparently I'm in the early stages of paranoid schizophrenia. I went to see a doctor and I was given a prescription for fluoxetine (prozac), but I've heard some pretty dodgy stories about it...so if anyone has any experience / advice it would be greatly appreciated, i've been sh-free for like 3 weeks now, but I'm worried more stress of medication might tip me over the edge. I'm just scared.

Thanks everyone and much love

xx

Hi Harriet,

I would recommend taking the medication, as it will help you in the long run. Maybe see a councellor while your on them to help you from going over the edge.

Good luck

If your doctor prescribed it it means that they believe the possible risks are outweighed by the possible benefits of the medication.
I've never myself been on prozac, but I've been on similar medication. I've heard of my friend's being helped by prozac and other similar medication, but I myself tend to have bad reactions to medication.

If you're worried about it speak to the doctor who prescribed the medication to you, but I would suggest at least trying it out for a month or two before you dismiss it.

If it was prescribed to you, I would recommend taking your medication. I'm one that is very wary of psychotropic medication, but if a doctor prescribes it I'd go with it. I personally prefer someone to have a prescription from a psychiatrists instead of a general practitioner, so if you're questioning it and were diagnosed by a GP, maybe you might want to talk to a psychiatrist.

Hey there Harriet,

I was prescribed Fluoxetine last thursday and I was also very wary about starting to take the medication. I sat in the psychiatrist's room and as she read me the list of side-effects, I did become very skeptic and worried about the prospect of taking it. However, I think you should realise that your doctor did prescribe you this medication for a reason and as others have already said, the benefits should therefore outweigh any negative effects.
There is a risk of increased suicidality with the medication, but that's generally because it's giving you a little more energy. I haven't [yet, at least] suffered from this and it's important that you do have support when you begin taking Fluoxetine incase this does happen. The only side effects I've had so far have been headaches, some racing thoughts and sleep changes. It hasn't been really bad at all and I think that as long as you do have support when you're starting your medication, you should be alright.
I haven't been taking it long enough to feel the true effects of the medication but I do have family members that it has worked for very well.

Take care.

I am on prozac. It is working very well, however meds differ from one to another. What may be right to me, may not be for you.

I would take the meds though. The docs wouldnt prescribe you anything that they believe wouldnt help.

Im currently on prozac and ive been taking them for about two weeks now. I have however, taken it twice in the past too, but i wouldnt take it for a few weeks, then take them all at once.
Ive been taking the right dose this time, and so far they have not had any affect, but its early days, and i was told it can take up 12 to work properly.
I think you should definatly try it. You never know how much it may help.

Hey there! I totally understand where you are coming from. It can be scary at first, but the risks of medicine causing more harm than good are fairly low. Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about your concerns. Always listen to your doctor and let them know if you are experiencing something that doesn't feel right to you. I have personally been on many different types and dosages of anti-depressants. It's nice to know that there are lots of options out there, so if one medicine doesn't work, there are more to try. So don't get discouraged if this one doesn't work out.

I would suggest maybe keeping a mood diary of how you are feeling. If you feel more tired, have less of an appetite, feeling more depressed or hyper, anything like that. It can really help you and your doctor to decide if the medicine is right for you, or if you may need to try something else.

Hang in there

You need to try and trust your doctor. As many have said, the doctor prescribed it believing the benefits will out-weigh the risks. If you start having trouble with it you can always go back to the doctor and switch too. So you shouldn't worry too much. =]

Agreed with the others, try it out. Worst-case scenario, if you're having problems, I'm sure your doctor would be more than willing to help you find alternatives.

I have taken Prozac... It sucks. I have gotten the worst side effects from Prozac. Vomiting, halusinations, and migranes where part of my daily life. There is also zoloft which I herd is bad if you have bipolar disorder because it gives you suicidal thoughts. Keep your head help high and talk to your doctor about alteritives.

Just remember that each medicine works differently for every person. One medicine may have unpleasant side effects for one person, and that same medicine may work wonders for another person. It just all depends on the person. If you do get side effects, they usually will go away after a few days. There are so many things out there to help you, so don't get discouraged!
