Questions - January 11th 2010, 02:40 PM

I'm considering making an apointment with my college's counsellor but I have a few questions I still haven't got answers to (I've looked on my college's site under student support but no luck)

1. What's the difference between a counsellor and a therapist?
2. It says what you say is confidential, but is actually being there confidential? will they tell my parents? I'm 18+ so I don't see why they would, but I'm just curious.
3. Do they actually help?
4. When I first go there how do I actually go about saying what I come there for? :| I mean do I just say "my problems are..." or what?

I went to a councellor in college, and they can't do alot.

Like, basically, you can present them with their problem, they can listen, then give you recommendations from there, or talk to you at certain scheduled times if you both feel it'll help. When I went to my councellor, I presented my issue, got asked questions, then he sent me on to the school nurse, who told me to see my family doctor, basically.

But there is usually a contract signed between you and whomever you talk to that legally binds the confidentiality. If that is broken, by the councellor saying anything (unless it goes outside the contract, like if you're a threat to yourself or others), you can, in fact, sue them, I think.

This may not be a substitute to therapy, depending on the depth of any problems you may have.

Thanks both I think I'll go anyway, just to see what she'll say. If it seems useless I'll try something else.

Well remember, if she can't help, she'll try her best to recommend someone who can.

That's true It's mostly due to mood swings, they're starting to get in the way of my college work So, they're getting a lot more problematic. As for causing harm to myself what would she do if I admitted to wanting to self-harm?

Well, I think you're considered an adult, so as long as you're not at-risk, nothing. If they're afraid you'll cause serious injury and/or kill yourself, or someone else, then they can take further steps.
