Arrow Shrinks, do you see one? - February 2nd 2010, 02:35 AM

I was just wondering how many people on here see a psychologist, psychiatrist or any variation thereof.

Was hesitant for years telling my parents how screwed up I was, I was an EXPERT at wearing a mask. But, finally over the summer - due to my cousin's death - I cracked and fell apart.

I started seeing a therapist this September, he wasn't able to help me at all. Went into a complete and total break down. Started seeing a school psychologist, seems like a cool guy and he's giving me ways to beat social anxiety disorder & is allowing me to express full hatred towards my father, first person in my life that's ever accepted that and not tried to ignore and minimize it.

I've seen a counselor, as part of a requirement for a class but still attended sessions. Not currently seeing one, but I am in training to be one. I will say, as your experience illustrates, one of the most important things in determining success in a counseling relationship is a good match of client and counselor.

And, maybe it's just me being me, but just because you see a counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist does not mean you are a "basket case." Plenty of "psychologically healthy" (i.e. non-diagnosable) people will see a counselor.

I didn't want to answer the poll as I don't view myself as a 'basket case', but yes, I see a therapist.

I've been seeing different people for just over 5 years now, it's taken a lot of time for me to build up trust or to even admit that there was anything wrong with my behaviours.

I currently see a therapist, and am being referred to a psychiatrist. And I guess my school counselor counts as well.

Basically just like the term, mostly due to Green Day's song about another anxiety disorder, depersonalization, that Billie Joe Armstrong has and is able to live with and get by.

I'm genuinely curious, where did you hear this from?

Anyways, back on topic... I'm not diagnosed with anything, thus I don't see a "Shrink". Though I have seen a councellor, but thats the extent of it. Mom doesn't really seem to believe in mental health issues, and my dad is never home since he travels for work.

It's in a documentary about how Green Day began. 'Basket Case' was written about what it's like to have depersonalization. In the documentary, Billie stated that he's had anxiety disorders - mainly depersonalization - and panic attacks all his life; only later on was he diagnosed. States it kind of resembles getting high. But, yeah the whole song is about having an anxiety disorder. Which, as someone who also has an anxiety disorder & panic attacks, it's really inspirational knowing a celebrity that's made it and also has something similar.

Do you have the time
To listen to me whine
About nothing and everything
All at once
I am one of those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Am I just stoned?

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex
That's bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
So quit my whining cause
It's bringing her down

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Uh, yuh, yuh, ya

Grasping to control
So I better hold on

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid?
Am I just stoned?

I have been seeing therapists off and on since I was 8. However, I did not find the right therapist for me until I was 19. I think that therapy can be extremely beneficial as long as you find the person that works for you.

Yes but not often anymore now it's only when I REALLY REALLY have to. Other then that I look to here or my friend for the advise and comfort I need or else I would be going a lot more.

I'll ad that I've actually been in therapy on and off since I was 5 years old.

We may shine, we may shatter,
We may be picking up the pieces here on after,
We are fragile, we are human,
We are shaped by the light we let through us,
We break fast, cause we are glass.
Cause we are glass.

I saw a therapist about two years ago. I should have stayed with her but I thought therapy was stupid and that I didn't need it. Even my own mom said that. However, she didn't quite understand anything that I was going through. So, I wish I was still seeing someone. However, it is great that I have a good friend and girlfriend who is by my side.
