My girl friend has BDD -
March 3rd 2010, 10:51 PM
Okay, so today me and my girlfriend were just having a laugh and talking at her house, and then we were asking each other random questions and stuff, then I told her something really upsetting which happened a long time ago (This has nothing to do with my story), she has told me not so long ago that she didn't want to go to the school prom because of self-harming scars and I am only now starting to understand what she went through, I mean, It's good that I'm understanding right? But anyways, today she told me she had been diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder, I had no idea what it was, i've vaguely looked over some websites and It seems that when she looks in the mirror she doesn't see the real her, I can't imagine what it would be like having this condition, I am going to try and understand to the best of my ability, I love her so much, I'd literally do anything for her, I just want her to be cured and for this all of her depression and this diagnosed condition to leave her alone, It seems the past 3 years of her life have been filled with depression, I feel so sorry for her and I love her so much.
I have no idea how to go about helping her with her new recognized condition, when she told me about it, she started crying, and I couldn't think of anything to say to her, I hadn't a clue what BDD was until now, I really need help with this, I know it's far easier for me than it is for her, but her being upset and things really feels like my life is being torn apart, this girl means the world to me, and I wouldn't ever give up on her because it's to hard or anything, I want to spend the rest of my life with her, I really do. Can someone please help me? I need help with how to cope with my girl friend having suffered from depression and that she has just been diagnosed with Body dysmorphic Disorder, and also how do I help her get rid of this? I'm literally willing to do anything to help her. Thank you for reading, Cazzum. x "If my body dies, let my body die, but do not let my country die" - Genghis Khan If you need advice: PM |

Well therapy/psychiatry is usually the route taken for things like this, if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps try to get her into something to help her mental health, and support her the whole way? Not much else you can do, that I can think of. Just, be there for her.

I can understand you're upset, but with the right course of treatment, things can be manageable. Of course, she may never be completely over this, but if you're there to support her, and she gets treatment, things may turn out good in the end.
I don't know alot about it, so I can't promise anything. So don't take my words as definitive fact. But I wish you both the best.

I would have to agree, just be there for her. Make sure she knows how you feel about her and how highly you think of her. Perhaps doing more research or contacting her psychologist to help you get a better idea of just what she needs right now?
Hope this all works out, for you and her! -Andie |
