weak and strung out - March 5th 2010, 02:40 AM

So I have this history of depression and for some time i began to feel really happy and it wasn't affecting me. It's just lately that that i've begun to feel sleepy, distracted, low mood- things i can identify as early warning signs after sort of managing to fight through it enough to feel more normal than i felt since i was a kid. I'm concerned that it will come back and probably am going to talk to someone if it gets worse. I'm a twenty year old college student, rather more of a loner- i'm deciding to refrain from any drinking until i feel mentally and physically better. and i dunno why i have to say this to you all. I just feel horrible lately and i can feel myself getting into the high anxiety and the stress weighing down on me. it makes me want to cry so hard but i keep trying to keep everything in my life in control and i'm just afraid of letting it get bad and going to the edge.

Hey there Jacquie,

I'm glad that you did get out of your depression and that you have been feeling a lot happier for a while, that's really great and shows just how strong you are!

I know that it is an awful feeling, to think that you may be slipping back down into depression after feeling so good. It is good that you are trying to keep everything in control, that's a very positive thing to do. It is important to try and push back at the negativity and distract yourself when ever you feel yourself getting down. However, it's also important to release these feelings of sadness in a controlled manner. I think it would be a great idea if you could talk to someone about how you are feeling or even just keep a mood diary, which may help you to get out those negative emotions.

Hey Jacquie,

I'm glad you managed to get out the depression, as Stephanie said - it shows how strong you are and that you can get through this again. It is also a really good sign that you are able to recognise how you are feeling. It means you are able to act with time before it fully sets in again.

Have you spoken to anyone about stress and anxiety you are feeling? I think it would be worth doing that - whether it is a parent, doctor, counsellor, friend. That way, someone will be there to support you in how you are feeling and I feel that could benefit you. It is good that you want to try and control things but sometimes it can be too much to do that on your own. Even if you just let someone know you are struggling so they are aware? It will perhaps make it easier for you and less of a burden for you to carry on your own.
