Bipolar/Manic Depression - April 15th 2010, 07:47 AM

I can't seem to find a clear positive answer about this.

My teacher in Psychology explained how Bipolar Disorder and Manic Depression are different things. I've always been told that they are the same thing.

I'm diagnosed Bipolar, and many people just call it manic depression. My therapist once explained that Bipolar is the more used modern term for manic depression. (Or it could have been the other way around.)

My teacher seemed amazed I didn't know this. She said with bipolar it's more anger and depression than mania and depression. I've also been under the impression that anger is a form of mania.

Any clarification would rock. I've already put in a call to my psychiatrist for her to clarify for me as well. xD

I was also under the impression that they are the same thing. Every website I've looked at classifies them as the same thing, just different names.

I'm pretty sure that Bipolar is just the more modern term for Manic Depression.
Again, if you find out this not to be the case, please enlighten us.

Huh :/ I always thought it was the same thing too. I'd be interested to learn what the differences are though.

I've always thought the same as you, that Manic Depression and Bipolar are the same. It says so on Wikipedia and many other websites so I think you're Psychology teacher has it wrong.

Yeah, I've always known Bipolar to be the modern term for "Manic Depression" as well. Though, maybe some people consider "Manic Depression" to be like, Bipolar Type II? Because Type II is usually more depression, with only Hypomania (or very rarely, Mania).

But as said, its always been seen to be the same thing as far as I knew.

Re: Bipolar/Manic Depression - April 18th 2010, 03:18 PM

I've always considered them the same. Bipolar seems like the more modern term... I imagine it's similar to how homosexuality is no longer in the DMV. It's become normalised and people have fought it to the point it's no longer officially classified as being a mental illness. I would assume that the term "manic depression" pissed some people off and so the term Bipolar was developed. To me, I always considered it the same as how "retarded" is no longer the politically correct term and is now considered offensive by many of the most recent generations.

LOL. I meant DSM*, not DMV...

Re: Bipolar/Manic Depression - April 21st 2010, 04:37 AM

Yeah, in the DSM it doesn't really list them as separate things, if they were it would say so. I'm beyond pissed that this is something my psychology teacher doesn't know... and I'm confused as to why I can't teach the class if the requirement is a psychology class as a Freshman in college.

It seems everyone says they're the same. I'll get an official word from either my therapist or psychiatrist and let you guys know lol
