Since you're not a mental health professional, don't attempt to give him an official diagnosis. Lists of symptoms are only part of what is needed in the diagnosis, the other part (which people never ask for) is the criteria. You can have all of the symptoms but if you don't meet the criteria, then you don't have the diagnosis.

Keeping that in mind, there are various types of bipolar disorder. Many of them involve the same symptoms but different criteria so there's no one universal list of criteria and associated symptoms I can provide you as no such one exists. There's other factors necessary as well, such as how long you've noticed these symptoms, his age, any illegal/legal substances he uses, his personality, etc... .

Well how long has this been going on for? Sometimes alcohol can change someone's personality as well. Alcohol messes with your brain cells every time you drink it, especially if excessively.

I'd suggest talking to your parents, or even him when he's in a good mood (if you feel safe doing such), or worst-case, go to your family doctor about it.

Do these mood swings occur during or after he drinks? Also, how often does he drink?

Hey there Beka,

It's good that you're showing concern for your older brother. I don't think it's easy for anyone to diagnose someone with Bipolar disorder, especially if you're not fully aware of the disorder. For example, you may not be aware that Bipolar disorder doesn't usually have 'sudden' mood changes. The only people who are able to diagnose mental illnesses or disorders are medical professionals.
If you are very concerned about your brother and his mental health then it may be a good idea to try and talk to him about what's going on, what you think and perhaps try and ask him to see a professional for his moods. That way, he will be able to get the professional help he needs.

Take care.

Hey,
What do you mean by "major" mood swings?? What happens when he does snap? Does he become violent or does he just become a bit snappy and in a bad mood?
Because it's quite common for people to change moods quite quickly, especially if they're stressed about something or maybe hormones or something is happening in his life you don't know about making him more snappy??

Obviously I'm not a professional or anything, so you'd have to get him checked by a doctor or something for a real diagnosis.
If it's getting to be really worrying though and really severe mood swings which could be impacting on your/his lives maybe try talking to him about it, not mentioning the bi-polar but maybe checking he's okay and let him know you're getting worried.

It's good to know that you're worried about your brother though, shows you care to ask for advice on here. Hope things get better for you all soon.
