Mental health nurse - May 13th 2010, 09:28 PM

I asked my G.P. a while ago about therapy and hadn't heard anything about it since. I had a letter today about me seeing a mental health nurse. I need to ask him/her a few things. What's are the differences between a mental health nurse, therapist and councillor? I'm quite confused as to what one is.

I was seeing a mental health nurse... sometimes they are better actually (from my experience anyways)

They actually understand the actual medical aspects of things, and know more about medications and such than therapists and councilors... (because they are medically trained, not just trained to 'listen')

Also.. (in my experience), they can actually talk with your doctor more than the others and actually have some say in your diagnosis and such. And.. sometimes they seem more understanding.

And also.. if you ever end up going to the ER for mental health reasons, you are going to see someone you know instead of a random person (at least here.. because she's the only one here).

Thanks Basically I want to ask/tell him/her a few things about the medication I'm on, irrational thoughts I've been having lately, self-harm and self-esteem problems I have. Is a mental health nurse really a person I should see just for a few questions/worries?

I don't know all that much but I did used to see a mental health nurse and she was my case manager. PERSONALLY, I found her unhelpful and she just didn't listen.. I much preferred seeing a psychologist etc

Well, they would be able to help with the medication aspects of stuff, and they are always someone you can talk to as well. They are basically the same people that you would find in the psych ward (they usually just have a bit more authority). It`s up to you ultimatly
